Angry Pump leak ????????

As most of you know Ive been dealing w/some pretty tuff issues w/ the truck all week, now Caver Dave and I have pretty much surmised that my prob is w. my IP through process of elimination. My pump has had a slow leak for sometime now and has gradually gotten worse.I was hoping if I described exactly where it was I could get some ideas.Just forward of the FSO appears to be what I can only describe as a seam,(looks like the pump may come apart there or something)anyway that is where I am losing fuel,it comes out on the drivers side ,runs down and drips off the bottom of the pump.Is there an o-ring in there that could be replaced?Could that be where I am getting air into the system?Im just diggin for more ideas,I looked at the exploded view of the pump on the sticky but really couldnt tell.

Sounds like you are talking about the seam where the pump head attaches to the main body of the pump. If so you can change the oring without taking the head off. Just take off the injector lines and loosen the head bolts enough to slide the head to the rear enough to expose the oring. Cut off the old oring and clean the groove and then stretch the new oring over the head and slip it into the groove, tighten up the head, install the injector lines and go. The V/W folks have been doing it on the side of the road for a while now and it is the same pump minus two lines.

Alright rlyons ,I appreciate the feedback dude. Now my theory was that the leak there was where air was being introduced into the system,is that a possible scenario???

DON'T take the head completely out however. If you do you'll drop out the insides which would be very difficult to get back in place with the pump on the vehicle.

How's the troubleshooting going? Have you found the problem yet?

I would think the leak would leak out but I can't see it sucking in air. Mine was leaking pretty bad and it still ran fine. The air pretty much has to get in on the suction side somewhere.

600 bills to get it rebuilt is not so bad. I got quoted $900-$1000 here in Austin.

Talking to the local Bosch tech recently, he told me that the threads in the pump body will strip out over the years (or due to overtightening) and that that's the most common cause of a leak at the head/body mounting area. He told me that it's not uncommon for him to helicoil 3 out of the 4 holes on any given VE build. The mis-alignment when one or more of those bolts loses its hold is often the demise of the plunger and barell as the tolerances are that close. 6 bills for a rebuild sounds good--you'll be back on the road before you know it

I have never seen one that the bolts have loosened but the orings are failing right and left. No need to rebuild if that's all it is, $20.00 for a seal kit and you are back on the road.
