Pull Cable

Now I want to do the pull cable deal. I have some throttle and choke cables just laying around not doing anything when taken off of something. Do I attach it to the lever on the side of the pump? And what do I do about the shutdown solenoid? Also where is the best place to mount it? Thanks!

Lever on the side of the pump.

Gut the solenoid. Take it off, remove the spring and plunger, then put the empty solenoid body back on.

Kill switch. No more dealing with the shut down solenoid. If you turn the key off, everything shuts down but the engine keeps going till you pull the cable.

Jon,

I would suggest not to use the choke cable. It was my first cheap fix for shut down and it binded terribly. I kinda went overkill on my present pull cable setup. I installed a "T" pull handle that is part of a drag chute release kit. It's a morse cable and smooth as silk. Go with the throttle cable and I think you'll be good. Like Dave said, attach it to the lever and gut the solenoid. I have my handle mounted at the bottom of the dash next to the trailer brake actuator.

Aloha,
Matt

Go to NAPA.

Get a kill-cable for a late-seventies/early-eighties R-Model MACK.

It will have a big RED octagon **** that says ENGINE-STOP.

They are meant to do this job.

Or simply run a 10 or 12 gauge wire out to the lever. Attach the cab end or the wire to something under the dash, maybe in the hood release area. It shouldn't cost alot to do something simple.

I pulled one in the shop that had a grass-string with a corn-cob handle.

It worked.

If you rigged a latch to keep the pull cable in the "pulled" position, wouldn't that also serve as an anti-theft device?

Can anyone think of a reason NOT to do this?

Sure would confuse a thief. I can't see any harm in it.

When you turn these trucks up, they tend to rip the tip off the shutoff solenoid plunger and then they keep running after you turn off the ignition. A cable saves you the aggravation of popping the hood to shut the engine off with the manual shutdown lever.
