Pto?
Anyone ever put a pto pump onto their first gen?
If anyone has, I'd like to know all about it!
I was told by a friend of mine (who has the same truck that I do) that the rectangular cover on the left side of the T-case is the PTO cover. Additionally, he told me that the gear lash adjustments are sensitive and/or difficult to do correctly, and that a tranny shop should really be entrusted to do the work.
Anyone care to comment on this? If you have installed one, did you do the work or did someone else? Where did you get the pump? What kind of work are you doing with the pump? Where did you put the reservoir? Where did you put the controls?
(Years ago I had a '63 Chevy C30 with a PTO dump bed, and it was pretty **** cool.)
Thanks,
CR

Very common on farm trucks. The getrag does have a pto cover on both sides, though I have never seen one installed.
On the farm trucks the hyd pumps are most commonly driven by a simple small driveshaft to a pump that is mounted right in the resivour. The resivours on our trucks are all around 1' square or slightly larger and mounted on the inside of the frame rail under the box.

Get the pto, a new gasket, slap it on there. In the case where the gear is too tight just get a thicker gasket. No big deal at all. You can feel if it has clearance when in gear, just rock the shaft to see. Any clearance is good.
I had a pto wich on a 64 Powerwagon, the pto was on the side of the transfer case np205. When I wanted to winch I would put the transfer in nuetral then I would have 4 forward gears to winch in at different line speeds, plus reverse to let line out slowly. I liked this setup, it worked great.
So yes you can bolt it onto the side of the transfer case or tranny. Dump bed I would recomend the tranny, winch the transfer. They sell different thickness of gaskets and also shims to get the correct clearance. Very simple to do not rocket science by any means.
