I have one on my truck and I like it. It spools fast enough for the 5-speed without choking at high speeds. I also have the 4:10 gears and I tow at highway speeds (70+) and have had no issues with EGTs even with PODs. That being said, I did do the HTT stage IV upgrade on the compressor side which helped as well. The 12 will spool a little faster but the 16 breathes better on the top end. I think it's a good compromise for a truck that works.

I would agree, I have both the 16cm and the HTT stage III and it makes a nice combination, for fooling around, towing, off road. 35+ pounds of boost. I have BD Diesel +60 hp xxx injectors and to be honest with this pump / air combination the run cool and really don't smoke that much.

but what housing? Stock turbos came with different housings.

You may already have the 18 and wont be a big change to the 16. If you have the 21 then yes its worth going to a 16. Everything i have seen is that with a 5sp you may want even smaller yet, helps build boost quicker after you lose it when you shift. All depends on how much you tow.

You need to get the numbers off the turbo and check the Holset parts list. Because you have a 1 ton, you can have something different than the typical "baby" H1C.
As far as H1Cs go, the best housing for towing is the 18. It is the best compromise between spool up and higher EGTs I've experienced. An 18 with a 60mm compressor is better. Otherwise go to a different turbo.

To Greed - LOL, I don't know, I never managed to get the tach hooked up, but with a stock governer spring it de-fueled around 85/90 mph. 2800/2900 RPM I'd guess.

I think the 18.5 Stock housing is a great overall housing. doesn't choke at all and doesn't spool tooo bad....

I went from 18 to 16 after everyone told me I had a 21 on my 93. Well it was an 18. Still the 16 I got was very inexpensive and I did perceive a slightly faster spool up... very slightly!!!
