so no matter how large the injector is, do all of them have a pop pressure of 245 bar to keep the pump happy? if so, i won't lose any performance from them by having them set to 245?

would 250 still be too high?

Edit: ok, they can do 245 if i want them to. i feel more comfortable that way. 245-250 bar was a difference of 72psi. maybe not enough to do much damage as quickly as 260 could, but who knows. i doubt i'd lose any performance out of them since the volume of fuel won't change just because the pop pressure increases. and i don't like the idea of them retarding my timing and me having to guess how much to advance timing to compensate for retardation. thanks again for the info guys. i'll start getting things back together tomorrow evening and keep you further posted.

what's everyone's opinion on installing head bolts? a method i've heard of and used back in my diesel classes was to put a little engine oil on the threads and under the head of the bolt. mechanics at my dad's work say they've used assembly lube before but i'm not sure what engines they work on. what do you guys think?

Engine oil should work fine, but ARP lube is the best.

how about some never-seize compound? would that work about as good as ARP lube?

No........DD's international compound is slicker than the Molly lube that ARP gives you in the HS box...

well, i've made a lot of progress. not a lot of parts mounted, but the head's on and torqued. you guys probably already know but, the torque plus 90* method that cummins requires now equals at least 125ft. lbs. . i didn't go any higher than that though. i don't have the valves set, but i've got #1 at TDC of the compression stroke and ready to start valve adjustment. it's FINALLY going to fire tomorrow afternoon, guaranteed! i'm grinning ear to ear. so stoked to drive this thing!! i'm drilling and tapping my manifold tomorrow for my thermocouple i'm ordering. my VDO gauge requires one with a 1/4"-18 NPT so it's a big one. i think the pilot hole to be drilled is 5/16"?? i'll double check. while i'm waiting on that, i'm just going to plug the hole for now and try to be easy on the the throttle . which i think i have to be easy on it for about the first hour while it warms up. i'm supposed to check the torque again after that aren't i? how long do i have to wait before i can really hammer down on this thing and see what it will do? i'm going to see what my EGT's read after all this and if it's not at a comfortable temp. i'm going to upgrade to a GDS 60mm!! this is going to be fun!! ok, so the flat black doesn't match the gloss that's on the front of the block, but oh well. i couldn't waste any more time trying to find a high temp gloss black cuz i needed to get it coated. anyhow, here's some eye candy for all of you...

first off, i just noticed that the picture of the injector nozzle wasn't correctly linked. forgive me, i was a little tired and therefore careless for not looking at things closely . for anyone who was trying to view it, here it is correctly linked this time...

furthermore, to continue with my regular updates. i made quite a bit of progress yet again today. the valve lash was set this morning and things slowly came together (usually the smaller things end up requiring more attention to detail). after adjusting the valves, i remembered a little trick BC847 came up with on the banjo bolt from the piston lift pump. the size of the orifi (stock) were approx. 9/64", david (BC847) opened his up to 11/64" comfortably and chamfered the edges essentially to remove any burrs. i performed that trick on my banjo bolt as well. thank you david! now my piston pump setup is complete.

not much else to say at this moment. but here's some more eye candy for everyone. i couldn't picture the valve covers before and i'm glad because i was stunned at how good the colors look together!!
