Price?

I found a 92 Dodge D-250 in beautiful shape, and I might be able to get it for $4500. Has a 3 speed auto trans, intercooled, extended cab, tires are in great shape, and I would be buying it from my uncle. If there is someone who drives slower than him, I'd like to know. This truck has never seen abuse from him, ever! Does this seem like a pretty good price? The only down side is that its 2wd, and I would really want it more if its 4wd. Like I said the body is nearly immaculate. I dont believe there is any rust anywhere and the paint isnt flaking off. Thanks,
Brian

I figure the truck as you describe is worth about $2500, and the engine & transmission are worth at least $2000, so when you put them together, it sounds like a deal to me, and you could probably get out of it without any loss. That said, I'm a 4x4 manual fellow myself.

Is it an aftermarket IC kit? There's no way a 92 should have a 727 3spd auto in it.....are you sure of the tranny, year of truck, etc?

I would not be interested in it at that price, that 3spd auto really makes these trucks worthless IMO unless you only go 55mph. I paid $4300 for my W250 5spd. The body wasn't perfect, but the paint is still shinny and non-flaking, interior was good, no rips. And of course that dana60 up front and 2 sticks on the floor

I could't agree any more, you don't want a 3 speed.

Well, I would have to give you a different point of view on the three speed auto. Now if your desire is to have a tire shredding asphalt eating drag truck, then these guys are right. However, if you want a dependable truck to do what normal people do with trucks, you know, haul fire wood, pull a boat, take out the garbage, then that truck would be fine. I have been driving these trucks since they first came out in 89. My first one was an 89 4x4 with the three speed auto. I did stuff with that little truck it never should have done. Pull stumps, pull other people out of ditches, had a dump bed insert on it and had two or more tons of sand and stone on that on many ocassions. I traded the truck after owning it for ten years with 142000 miles on it and it is still on the road today across the river. The only thing I ever did to it was pull the pan twice and adjust the bands and replace the rear crank shaft seal. My second truck was a 95 two wheel drive with the auto trans. I pulled a 16 foot trailer with it hauling four wheelers and dirt bikes and cars and tractors. Never had a minutes trouble with it.
As far as the price goes, an item is only worth what the buyer is willing to pay. If it has been taken care of as you say, I would pay that price for it if I were looking for one. It all depends on what you want.
Good luck and hope this helps.

I have a 3-speed A727 & I would agree that it can be frustrating trying to keep up with todays freeway traffic. I looked into a Gear Vendors overdrive & I found it to be too cost prohibitive for such an old, dented truck with no air conditioning. I bought my truck about 7 years ago when all Cummins trucks were going for top dollar. Compromising with an older model put the truck in my price range. If I had to replace the truck today, I would get a slightly newer model with a stick shift. For now, the truck still pulls my boat (at 55 mph) at about 1850 rpm(if my alternator tach is right). I view these early models like I would view a first boat. It's a cheap way to get you feet wet to see what you really want. It bought me time so that if I bought a new one, I could get the new 325/600 Cummins. Don't think I will though, my old beater still runs.
