Power Steering Pump

What is the prefered method of removing the power steering pump on a 1990 d350? Should I remove the vacume pump and power steering pump as an assembly of the motor and then seperate the two or leave the vacume pump on the motor and try to get the power steering pump off by it self?

I think its easier removing the entire assembly. There are only two bolts instead of four small nuts.

I would pull them off together cause if you pull just the power steering pump it will be hard to put it back together with the vacuum pump still on the truck cause you have to line up the coupler in the vacuum pump with the shaft on power steering pump the two are easier to line up off the truck. When i did mine i didn't get them fit together right and when i bolted the steering pump to the vac pump (Still on the truck) i broke one of the ears off the back of the vac pump. Lucky i can weld aluminum.

I have done it twice without removing the vacuum pump. I just marked the position of the old coupler as a reference whenever I pulled it apart. You just need to gently slip the shaft into the vacuum pump with out forcing it. In other words if it doesn't slip right in you may need to slightly adjust the position of the shaft.

For what the seals cost I would remove the whole assy, reseal the vac assy and pwr steer assy. Seals for both are dirt cheap. A new vacuum pump pod is not... Two are ridiculous...
