Please! Please! Help Diagnos my problem!

Got into my truck this afternoon (92 W250 Auto) and put the truck in gear and my speedo quite working and the truck would not shift out of second gear! Soo I came to a complete stop and put it into first and manually shifted through 1st 2nd and 3rd and smoothly into overdrive just like it was new and remained fixed until I turned the truck off! But now I have to do that every time in order for everything to work properly! I'm a terrible mechanic and felt like some of you experts will be able to pin point my problem without me having to spend mucho money for a shop to tell me! My odometer stopped last week but the speedo has yet to fail me until today! A buddy of mine said something about a sensor ob the transmission may need to be replaced! I have No idea and greatly need some help! Thanks soo much in advance for the help! Take Care Dan!

Mine is cable tied on tight from the previous owner.... common issue

Sticking off the side of the tranny, driver side. Very easy to get to especially on a 4x4.
