Talking play in front axle near hub

I have a '91 Dodge w250 that needed the front hubs cleaned and greased. When I took the hub off I noticed a lot of play in the font axle shaft where the hub slides on. How much play is suitable? Both axles on my truck have about the same amount of play? But do I need bearings? Where can I find a hub nut socket that will fit the hub nut?

Thanks!

You should be able to get the socket from any local auto parts store. be VERY careful, it's easy to slip and knock off the little "pin" on the inner nut

On another note, I have to ask... 4 speed manual?

Yes it is a 4sp. Do you think I need wheel bearings or is play in the axle shaft normal?

The axle shaft isn't supported by the wheel bearings. There's a torrington bearing inside the spindle that the stub shaft rides on. It can be a pita to get out (hub has to be removed). What 4 speed you runnin? What rear gears?

I'm not sure the correct amount of movement, but i am pretty sure that there will be some when you take the lockouts off. I replaced the u-joints up fornt and packed the bearings along with new lockouts, If I am correct I believe it's the locked that centers the outer part of the shaft and keeps it in place.

So what I the tranny out of? or is it just an nv4500 that lost 5th? lol.

I also have about 1/2 to 5/8" lateral play in my front axles, from in and out of the diff as well, none up and down though...this play is not as present when the wheels are turned, so i would think that it might be necesssary tolerance for correct 4wd steering action...anybody else?

The axele shaft kinda floats in the hub assembly and will move around when servicing the hub/ bearings. Nothing to worry about. If the bearings get loose and start moving you'll know.

My inner hub bearings are shot as well. They are a PITA to replace as mentioned. Gotta pull the whole spindle to press new ones in.

Most places will sell a kit with all the needed bearings, dust seals, ect.. in one bag.
