picked up an hx35, some ???s

Well I know a guy in my town that i go snowmobilin with sometimes and he has 2 24 valves that are pretty heavily modified. They are both 01s. He has a black 01 that he just put an ATS compound turbo set up on. He had a BD Super B special on it before he put the twins on and he said that he didn't really like the super B because it took forever to spool. I was askin him if he wanted to sell it, and he said his brother was gonna try and put the super B on his 7.3 powerchoke but he said he thought it wouldn't work. But he said he still had his stock turbo off his auto, and he just gave me an hx35 for free! :shock:He said he didn't need it and that he was gonna junk it or it was just gonna sit in his shed so he just gave it to me. It made my day! He said he really liked this turbo cuz it spooled really quick, its off his auto and I'm not sure exactly what housing it has on it. Is it a 16 or is it smaller? it has a J-hook on the wastegate too. It only had about 134,000 miles on it if it was the stock turbo, it has no shaft play and seems in good condition. So will this turbo just bolt right up to my manifold? and the oiler and everything??? here is a pic of it. is it a 16cm housing???

It looks like an HY-35. that the ones that came on the autos. It looks like the one on my '02. I just made a deal with a friend to buy an HX-35 from him for my truck.

Yeah that is an HY35. They have a 9cm ex housing IIRC.

Not bad for free, but probably too restrictive for any big plans.

It will bolt on the engine, the exhaust will require some fabbing. Replace that bolt on elbow with a 3" v-band plate. Then move the exhaust back an 1" or so.

a 9cm housing??? wow thats way smaller than i thought! It will spool quick, but it will run hot right??? He said he loved the spoolup with this turbo. so what is the difference between the hx35 and the hy35? which is better? I don't need a big upgrade right now, I just need a good turbo to keep my egts down cuz i have egt problems, so I think this will work for what i need right now. He said that if the super B doesn't work on his brothers powerchoke, he would sell the Super B to me if I wanted it. Oh and where do I get the 3" V-band plate??? and i wanna fab up a 4" downpipe while I'm at it. I need to take the silencer ring out too. what about the oil lines? will they hook up fine?

The backing plates can be found on ebay, or maybe the classifieds. They come on the 12v HX35's and the WH1C.

Yea thats a 24 valve auto HY35 turbo, I heard they suck past 30psi and I've never really heard a good thing about them... HX35's came on stick trucks.

I think you have to take the size of the turbo into consideration (the Super B) to see if it would be any good on your truck. If it is a huge turbo, it might be better with a modified hx-35 on a twins set up.

Can you swap out exhaust housings on those turbos just like you can with the hx-35?

If you're having egt issues now, you probly don't want that tiny restrictive hy-9.

I think a 12's probably even too small for a work truck. I run the 12cm just because my truck's a daily driver and rarely works hard. I have a 16cm sitting on the shelf for that.

I dont think it will hurt anything to try it out, pretty sure it will lower your egts a little

I think I'll put it on and try it out and see how I like it. I got it for free so I've got nothin to lose. I'm thinkin that with the small housing I can bring in a lot more air so it'll drop my egts more, but we will see what happens. And yeah the guy i got it from said it could never get it past 30 lbs. He said he loved how it spooled and everything but he couldn't get past 30. Do those J hooks help at all with the wastegate? I've heard that you can tighten them as far as they can go and it wont make a difference???

hey would this work for my exhaust?
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/DODGE...Q5fAccessories
I know it is the V-band that goes on the turbo, but could I buy this, flip it around, bolt the two ends together and have the V-band on the bottom and cut my downpipe and weld the piece thats on there to go up into the V band? or would this not work?

I would just throw that turbo away man.... No offense but the 9cm is gonna be sooo restricting and will raise your EGT's over a nice 18.5 you have now.

Sure, but you could probably find the correct adapter for less. Like was said, not really a great idea to begin with. Your friend didn't give it up for nothing because it was really worth anything anyway, did he?
