Overfilling the Getrag...
Overfilling the Getrag...
O.K...so I changed out my tranny fluid and overfilled it like everyone recommends. However, ever since then there appears to be fluid coming out of an overflow vent and is leaving 3-5" spots on the ground. Granted, I was messy filling it up through the "fill hole" and probably got some under the truck. Would that still be dripping off of the truck after 500 or so miles? What else might be the cause? I am perplexed...(my big word for the day)
I did mine today also. I tried to put the 5 qt. jug up to the 1" angle fitting but I quickly discovered that the oil would rather run down the side of the jug. I wound up putting it in a 1 qt jug then pouring it in very slowly. I think I'll get a 1" nipple and a cap for next time so I can get the full 5 qt. in.
The Mobil-1 5w40 synthetic oil sure made it shift smoother. It runs quieter also.
There's so many spots on the driveway now I couldn't detect a leak unless it was of Bibical proportions.

the easiest wayt to over fill teh Getrag is through the shift lever assymbly at the top of the tranny.
Its a PITA, remove the rubber boots, remove teh "C"-clip, and all... but since its not something you have to do an a frequent basis, its abotu worth teh time to do it this wasy, at least it was to me...

I bought a little hand pump from the local Advance Auto store . . . screws onto a gallon or 5qt bottle, and about 10,000 pumps later, the oil has been squirted through whatever fill hole you want with no mess. Last time I topped up the Getrag, I took out the top PTO cover bolt on the passengers side.
I have not had nor heard of trouble with puking vents after over-filling the getrag. Spilt oil will drip for a long time. I would get under there and celan off the tranny if you are worried about it -- then you will be able to tell if the oil is leaking out or not.

I had mine changed at one of the local Get-er-Lubed places. When I told him what I wanted, "5W-30 in the tranny and it'll hold 3.5 quarts but I want you to pump in another quart for 4.5 quarts total." So he drained it and refilled it like I asked but he did ask, "are you sure about the 5W-30"?? I asusured him that this was a "thin oil" tranny and that I HOPE he's never put in the old 90 weight gear oil in any of these trannys cause I don't think they'd live long. He shrugged.... Anyway, that pump they use really pushed it in but I haven't seen a drop on the ground either. I haven't really noticed any difference in shifting either as my tranny seems to be in pretty good shape, having never had a problem with it. Still, I'm sure it approves of fresh oil....

I measured what I drained out and it was right at 3-3/4 qts. I put in at least a qt more than that. I'm thinking about doing what another member was thinking of. Cutting a hole in the floor over the "new" fill pipe and putting in a dipstick. I'm handy with sheetmetal and rigging a little door over the hole would be a snap. With my arthritis it would sure beat laying on the ground and pouring it in a little at a time.
My shifter doesn't seem to have any way to pour it in from the top. Maybe I've got an oddball shifter setup. There is NO "C" ring to take out to pull the shifter ball out. It looks like the whole top cover would have to come off and I ain't about to do that just to add oil. It is a Getrag tranny though I looked at the plate while I was underneath. Anyone else have this oddness?

I don't see what the big deal is, I used the top pto bolt with the bottle that lucas additive stuff comes in and its a breeze. Could it be more difficult to get at it with 4X4 guys?
I use to take the shifter out until I realized I didn't need to.

Ed, there should eb a small metal plate that has 4-6 bolts holding it on that needs removed to get to teh C-clip... but you shouldn't have to remove the whole shift assymbly or top cover...

any chance anybody has a pic of where this bolt is?
I just bought my D350 this past weekend, and haven't had the chance to crawl under there and poke around...and I'm out of town til Friday...but I want to drain it and put 4.5 qts of synthetic 5W-30 in it...
do you access it from above or below?
Thanks.
Greg
All the bolts that hold the pto covers go through the casting, so any of them will work as an oil fill. The top one, obviously, will allow you to add the most. The pto covers are the rectangular side covers on either side of the tranny.
You got it
One cover on either side. You can actually see the fill and drain plug in my pic, fwiw. I go through the top loader on my truck. I've got it down to about 15 minutes for a change.
