overfilling Getrag

my mechanic tells me that overfilling the Getrag by 1 quart + is stressing the front seal and may result in clutch slippage...thoughts?

Even if he were correct a front seal and a clutch is far cheaper to fix than a Getrag that is locked up. If he wants to discuss it, we can sit around my locked up Getrag and have some coffee Mark

Park your truck w/ passengers side up on a 8"curb. Take the plug out, should take an extra quart no prob.

Keeping a seal completely submerged in oil when it was only designed to be splashed by the oil is definitely harder on it, and is asking more of it than it was meant to do. Certainly there are hundreds of people who have done it with no problems, the same way there are hundreds of these trucks that have never had a KDP problem. You are merely increasing the risk of a seal failure. Whether you deem it an acceptable risk is up to you.

Personally, I'm quite willing to throw a bit of extra oil into a Getrag, while on my differentials I tend to keep the level slightly below the fill plug to make life easier on the seals.

I think It is a unofficial TSB. I know I heard of it right from a Old Dodge Mech even before I had the Getrags .

definitive word

just bought a rebuilt G360 from Jim Clark (was "jjeeper" on E-Bay, now uses "Tristate Transmissions" as his user name). For those of you who don't know him, he's a nice guy in his early 60s who rebuilds trannies for a living. Very pleasant to talk to and he ships Getrags all over the world.

Jim ships all of his G360s with five quarts of Mobil 1 5W30, which is available at Walmart for about $22/gallon.

He told me that the seals are NOT stressed by the extra oil, that there's a breather just forward of the shift assembly that relieves excess pressure

He is right, this transmission uses the gears to lubricate itself. There is no oil pressure or sending unit in the 360. The seal is metal coated with viton. The newer kits use a better compound. I wouldn't worry about it, no way it's going to leak unless your shaft is a bit loose
