Over full trans fluid/trans slipping

About 3 months ago i check my trans fluid because it was starting to act up and noticed it was over filled. So i drained it some to bring it back to the O.k. mark. It was over full by about 1.25 quarts. I thought it got over filled by my brother when he used my truck a week or so before hand.

And now today when coming home from a meet i had to step on it to pull out into traffic and it slipped really bad. I have been babying it after it acted up the first time. After about a mile i pulled over to check the fluid. It again is over full. What could be causing this? Could the heat exchanger have an internal leak causing coolant to be mixing in the fluid. I noticed today that my coolant was down at the add line.

The trans feels horrible and it does nothing but slip. I would suspect that the trans is going to need a rebuild after this.

Oh, I thought you had some major work done to the transmission if you were going to put 450-500 horsepower through it.

Does antifreeze mix with ATF?

I'm not sure how well it mixes.... but I know it is heavier, so it would be at the bottom of the pan. You may notice it on the dip stick, but i don't think they go all the way down.

If there is anti freeze in the trans the oil would be a milky red. If your checking the fluid when you first start it or after a short drive it will be normal temp. When you check it after it has been slipping it will be a lot hotter and should read higher on the stick. It is normal for it to fluctuate with temp.

Are you checking it when it is running and the engine is warm and the trans is in Neutral. All of these need to be right for you to get the correct reading.

the trans temp read 150 and was read in neutral. temps never got above 150 and have not been any higher than that since the swap. Expect when a cooler line back in spring blew apart and i lost 5qts of ATF.

450-500, nope not me. My goal always was 400hp and that is where i am at. Well pretty darn close and the 393 dyno run was with a stock fuel pin.

Yhea It looks just like a Strawberry MilkShake if coolant has mixed in. If it still looks just red or a darker color then I don't think that is the case. Dose the fluid smell burnt? And is it slipping in all gears or just on take off?

My past experiences with an over full situation was the result of a clogging up transmission filter. How old is the trans filter?

You're probably 450-500 at the crank, before it's transferred through your transmisson... that's what I was trying to say.

it certainly is not milky red. its dark and scary looking

all gears, of course it feels worse when starting from a stop. It slips and the RPMs go up and if you let up a little bit you can feel it start to catch and then the trans sorta hooks back up.

about 9 months and 6,500 miles. I don't drive it all that much i have two other vehicles. But most of the time when i am driving it it is either pulling a trailer or has something heavy in the bed.

Look into BC847's trans build with the additional clutch's and such. Doing just the valve body and TC helps but the clutches should get upgraded as well. It sounds like its going to have to come out and apart.

i read it like 10 times. I really wanted to upgrade everything but funds were tight and i needed the truck on the road. It was suppose to have been rebuilt about 20,000 miles before i got it so that was one of the other reasons why i did not. It looks like this years tax returns are going towards the trans again.

i am glad i kept the 518. i think i will be putting that back in next weekend.
