So after driving the truck a bit it still wanders. I'm a little bit agitated.

It's got a borgeson shaft, and brand new psc box. The system is bled.

I had hoped I could have nice tight responsive steering. Or is that impossible without going crossover?

Anyone have a suggestion?

You might get it tight enough but I can honestly say Crossover is the best thing they came out with for theses truck's .

****, I really don't want to lift it. I'll order that dodge connection brace and see if it helps first.

I'm going to install one of those as well when I do my crewcab 4wd conversion.

But that reverse steering set-up that NJTman posted up seem like the best solution to those of us who don't want any lift. That upgrade is on my to-do list once the 4wd conversion is done.

Did you get a new gear that has the quicker ratio for more responsiveness ????? That made all the difference in my truck and in BobVA's. Instead of 4.5 turns lock to lock, I think I'm 2.5 Can't remember the specifics, but you can contact Chip at www.powersteering.com and discuss it with him.

Wandering can also be a sign of bad kingpins, tie rod ends, or your front axle's alignment being out of wack due to incorrect spring heights (sagging or raised springs). When my springs were sagged, my truck wandered as well... which I believe alters the caster on the truck... hence the wandering.

You also have to remember that you re-installed that "4x4" attachment plate to the gear which bolts to the frame. That plate "flexes" when you steer and can cause some sloppyness in the feel.

You also didn't say which "borgeson" gear you bought. They make a double u-joint one, and the other type only has the single joint that attaches to the rag joint on the steering column. If the column has a lot of play in the lower sector of it, or that rag joint is original, you'll also get a lot of slop..

Its got the rag join borgeson (it was in it when I bought it). The slop isn't in the shaft though.

It nuts, I can turn the steering shaft by hand through the wheel well and see the box flex off the frame a bit. Everything is torqued to spec and the weld is good no crack.

I'm going to just go crossover and box/gusset the frame eventually. I'll just deal with it for now.

My steering box did that too when the steering box mounting bracket was all cracked to he11. Maybe a dumb question but did you check the steering box bracket for cracks too?

Also. After putting the new bracket on it still did it. I thought I cracked the new bracket but what happened was the bolts that mount the bracket to the box loosened themselves off. I re tightened them and they loosened up again. After this happening a couple times I jut locktited the bolts and they were good.

Moral of the story. So check both of those things if it's still flexing off the frame. Loosening bolts or the cracked bracket.

No cracks in the bracket. I wire wheeled it clean to bare metal and primed and painted it. When mounting the box to the bracket I used locktight and torqued to spec. I figure its just the flex in the box/frame.

Question for ya'll. Had the lady turn the wheel while I watched the crack. Clearly flexes the crack open and closed. I have a brace coming and am planning on fix. But in the meantime truck drives the same as always straight and true just like the last 24K. It's not affecting the driveability. Point is I'm doing a long road trip for the next week and don't have time to fix before trip. Has anyone just had their front end collapse while just driving down road? Ya know have the spring shackle or steering box just fall off? Not wheeling or anything, but just normal driving. Thinking I can get away with it for just a little while longer, since it's probably been that way for awhile anyways.

Had a 76 2wd that I bought from a friend. It started as a crack in the same area, then worked its way through the frame. He ditched it when it broke and wouldn't turn when the frame was under tension. It would stretch when turning one way, but would turn when the frame was in compression.

Does the crack run to the bottom side of the frame?

If not I wouldn't worry about it.
