Angry Old truck blues

Well, I seem to have purchased an '89 D250 fixer-upper. Part of the trouble is that the 727 occasionally won't shift into higher gears, stays in 1st or 2nd, and the tranny fluid is frothy pink. ***?

There is a guy near here selling a lo-miles 727 from a 440 Dodge. Will this thing bolt up to CTD?

bk, the pedestrian..

Frothy pink, hows the fluid level. High, low? Fluid is getting alot of air introduced to it.
Check your fluid level first.

I'm going to say no the 727 from the 440 will not bolt up,(I was wrong once) even if it did you would not want to run it. Its set up for a gas motor, it would not live long behind a diesel.

A 727 from a gas motor will not bolt up. The bell housing is different.

And the valve body/govenor calibration is set up for gasser rpm shifts, I don`t think a cummins would be too happy doing a 5-6000rpm WOT upshift.

Cool The truth inside

Shop got the pan off the 727, stuff in there looking more like pepto-bismo than trans fluid. Bits of the brand-new clutches under the pink layer. Shop manager thinks the thing was improperly assembled in the first place, and tranny fluid contaminated with water. Ca-ching$$

They do think it'll be cheaper to fix it than to replace it. Heh. I got this thing to use 'cause I thought it would be cheaper to fix than my old Mercedes diesel, which has gone to nickle, dime, and five hundred dollaring me to death. Cripes, should have bought a bicycle.

Well, enought whining for today, next, the front end...

Ca-ching!

$1360 bucks. Ow! Must-pry-fingers-loose-from-ankles....

I asked 'em going in if it wouldn't be better to just get a new/used/other one instead. Guess they saw me coming. This sucker better have a solid gold warranty..

rebuild the 727 in my dads 90 for $800. That included labor of removing and reinstalling. Also had them put in a new rear main seal while they were at it.

Might shop around? Or sometimes if it is a guy you know or trust the extra cash is worth it.

Even with installation that's steep. The build up should be within 6, around 5 for the in and out. You should get a free overdrive at that price. A new 4l60 is $1400.

$1300, I hope that includes a new TC as well.

And they always get you when they have part of YOUR vehicles sitting on THEIR table.

TC, clutchs, bands, some bushings and seals, 'most everythg but the case and valve body. It now works perfectly and has no leaks. My wallet hurts, but I guess I can live with it.

How come my engine oil doesn't get dirty? I thought diesels were supposed to smoke up the oil, mine stays clean.
