Ok, so you talked me out of it...next question: New Tranny again? NV4500?
So, I'm thinking my tranny is on its way out. It makes some weird, BAD noises.
I can see a few options in front of me, but honestly after removing and replacing the Getrag about 69 times, I'm getting a little bit tired of it and its quirks.
I've priced out an NV4500, new with AA adapters its $2800 shipped to my door...which seems like a lot.
I was wondering where you guys picked up NV4500s? I don't want to do what I did last time and get another beat tranny that's going to need to be replaced in a year.
And I'm not totally against getting the G360 rebuilt. The guy on eBay seems to be pretty solid and that's like $1200ish.

I don't really like my 4500, but the price was right and I did it. I found mine local off of Craigslist. I went through it and fixed what was wrong. I think its slow to shift myself, but I know it will handle a bit more power so its a fair trade off, plus parts are a bit easier to come by.

Naw, that's too much. Ideally I'd like what I have to work with no work and (more importantly) no more money. But it isn't shaping up like that. I'm fine with a 5 speed...heck, it's practically a 4 speed with a granny.
PS - Can't afford the Ford...booO!

The question is why you have needed to remove it so many times?
If you like the way it shifts and are will be under 400 hp forever, rebuilding it correctly is the easiest, cheapest solution.
Maybe contact one of the members on this forum who have done a few.
That could save you and give them some extra money.............................just a thought.

Well that's an easy story to tell!
I bought the truck with an auto...the auto exploded...I hated the auto. I bought a donor truck with a stick, I bought a new clutch and had the pressure plate faced and installed it all. It vibrated bad...neutral, parked, coasting, driving, with RPM. I took it all apart and checked for runout and had the pp and flywheel rebalanced and put it back together. Still did it so I took it apart again, put the old clutch and pressure plate in that came from the donor truck and it ran smooth as silk, but it slipped. So I got a new new clutch and it didn't vibrate anymore.
Lol. But the tranny I bought came from a rusted out 89 with a flatbed and a plow and she's hard to get into third and makes a heckuva racket.
Maybe I'm just too picky...I don't know.

Definitely go through the 'rag if you can afford the down time. They'll hold decent power if gone through properly and parts are pretty easy to come by. I don't really care for the 4500 in my 96. If I had a 1st gen again, I'd go rag or g56.

I agree with flatbed93: the NV45 is a slow shifter and the gap between 3rd and 4th drives me insane with 4.10 gear ratio. The NV56 - I drove it in a 2nd gen 24 valve was much nicer on both fronts. But the cost of it - unless you come across a killer-deal - is a little prohibitive.
Maybe get that G360 looked at "in depth" by a tranny professional. I've had better luck with a transmission shop that deals with mid-sized trucks and heavy equipment than your regular transmission shop, but that was my experience only...

I have one of his trans in my truck, (if its the same seller) Have had no problems with it and have roughly 5000 on it so far. You can call him up and hes good to talk to if you have any questions as to his shop or how he does it.
Personally , I would stay with the Grag. Unless your making big power, or towing every day, these trans 'should' last for many years if not abused. Just my .02

.................... I'm not totally against getting the G360 rebuilt.
Think about this:
No one ever seeks out the Getrag G360 to swap into anything.
The most appropriate application for the G360 is inside the scrap metal dumpster.
I dumpstered my 'rag, swapped in a NV4500 and left behind forever worries of a tranny failure. 500 miles from home pulling a fifth wheel the peace of mind is alone worth the price of a swap.

i have roughly 240,000 on my rag. the guy who owned the truck before me had it rebuild becuase he heard a noise and it was his daily driver so he didnt want to take chances. i love it, she shift nice, easy to put into gear and doesnt seem to make noise like everyone else says. if mine ever went i think id try to get ahold of mysteryman to have rebuild it.

I've never driven a getrag, but when I drove my 97 home, I thought it shifted just fine with over 300k on it. Might have been rebuilt, but I doubt it. Truck was stock. The gap between 3rd and 4th is crazy though! I can't believe how low 3rd feels, but then 4th and the rpms come WAY down and you can GO!
I just bought a whole truck for about the price I see swaps going for online anyway. Craigslist for me. It took my awhile to find, but finding stuff like this in New England always seems to be less plentiful than the fellahs out in the midwest and south.
