I have a stock 91 w250 4x4 cummins with a rusted out oil pan. I have patched it a few times, but now I need to change it. I have heard that if you remove the valve cover nearst the fire wall it will give you room to lift the engine and slide out the pan. Has anyone done it?

 

I had my pan off the other day. I removed the nuts from bottom of motor mount isolators. I then raised the engine as much as I could. I supported the weight under the dampner. After loosening the pan and dropping it down to the cross member, I then loosened the oil pick-up with a 10mm (i think) end wrench. Two bolts front right corner and one or two bolts along the left side. You need to sneak the wrench into the gap. Let the pick-up lay in the pan and slide the pan out rearward.

When you put it back in, the new pan gasket has a tab on it to seal the pick-up. Don't forget to put the pick-up back in the new pan before wiggling it back in there.

It is a pain in the butt, but it beats pulling the engine by a couple of weekends. Good luck.

Yeah I took the hood off, and pulled the bolts out of the motor mounts and picked up the motor as much as I could with a cherry picker. TAKE THE #6 VALVE COVER OFF too! lol
