I removed mine and put it in the change jar. No problem.

I removed mine well over 100,000 miles ago. Perhaps seven or eight years ago?

I'm unaware of any harm that can be caused by modding or removing the washer. That's not to suggest Cummins put it in there for grins-n-giggles either.

I think (careful), the washer serves as a positive stop for the movement of the fuel pin when under maximum boost conditions. I think it's to help eliminate any sideways loads that may be presented to the needle that rides on the fuel pin.

If you look at a used fuel pin, you can see where the needle rides. Notice that at the deep part of the fuel pin (max boost position), the needle gets close the bottom of the ramp. If one were to shave the washer, one would want to simply remove enough material so as to allow the needle to ride the ramp all the way to the absolute deepest part (for maximum fueling). Any further, would be asking the needle to push sideways against the bottom of the ramp right there. Nothing's to be gained and as you might imagine, with SUPER boost, one could conceivably bend the needle.

Clear as mud?

Take your pick, shave it a little, or just pull it out. I dunno.

NOTE: If you opt to shave your washer, don't get all bent out of shape trying to keep everything ultra flat and such. It's just a bumper in its function.

To answer your question, shave it by half. Taking it out completely won't hurt either. Your call.

I removed the washer and replaced it with a thinner O-ring just to act as a cushion between the 2 parts.

I ran an .070 nylon washer I picked up at Lowe's.
Then I went to an .040.
Now I've got an .020 just as Jim Lane said " to act as a cushion".

Actually, since I've turned up the power screw I'm cranking back on the star wheel and smoke screw and may go back up on the washer.
