np205 gear question

Can I take a gear out of a auto (23 spline) np205 and install it in a manual (29 spline) np205? If so is there a seal or o-ring that should be replaced? Can it be done in the truck or do I need to drop the t-case to install? Thanks, RAM

All the gears interchange between the auto and stick Tcase except the input shaft.

You haven't said which gear so its hard to say if it can be done in truck.

the teeth count might be different depending on whether you have 4.10 or 3.54 rear end ratio.
Was there a ratio adapter on your truck?

You mean the piece that sensor screws to? If so yes it had one on it, I unscrewed it from the transfer case prior to removing the old one. Then simply screwed it on and plugged the wire plug onto it.

What I am trying to find out is if I can pull the gear out of both then put the one in the auto into the manual? The truck has 3.54 gears. I assume the manual transfer case is setup for 4.10's being I was off by about 10mph.

Look at the number on both of them. I bet it is the same drive pinion.

I had a Tcase from a 3:54 truck apart. I took the Tcase from my 3:08 geared truck apart. Both drive pinions had the same number laser etched into them.

^ I have never had one out. Is it just held in with the one big nut? Then just pull it? I believe there is a white nylon gear. Correct? Thats what is different, right? Is there an o-ring? WHat keeps the grease in? Thanks, Robert

The drive pinion gears are steel. It is a one piece setup. Just unscrew it out of the Tcase. The numbers are etched on the side of the steel body.

The drive gear is plastic. Its a 7 tooth gear. On the color your guess is a good as mine. With over a decade of oil soaking. There is not telling what the orginal color was.

Both cases I took apart there was no o-ring or seal on them. The reseal kit I bought didn't have o-rings in it eather.
