Need some fast advice; 1998 QCLB 12 valve 3500 5 spd purchase

Two too many tires, I agree.

My plan is to run 17" 3rd gen aluminums and run it as a srw and possibly just save the good bed and get a flatbed made.

The 17's will fit over the 98 calipers and drums and I believe as long as my tires and rims are rated for it, I could legally run close to the dually gvw.

I'd say that is just a bit high (sorry I'm not a 1st gen, maybe biased) but if the body is in good shape that is very reasonable. For the t-case issue, my old 98 1500 did that, the spring inside that rides against the shift forks broke, easy fix. Could be worn/missing fork pads too. Either way they are pretty stout and easy to fix units usually. I'd go for it.

Just thinking too, you may already know this but 5th gear can be an issue, as well as that KDP - Good time to fix the oil leak. That should have a 215hp pump and should run pretty strong too, they wake up good with little mods.

If you plan on running the 3rd gen wheels, I believe you can fit the 3rd gen brake setup on it as well. From what I've heard it's a good improvement, if you don't like how it stops with the stock stuff. Good luck.

Called him back to seal the deal and guess what...............says the price we are talking about does not include the new bed.

Now we are back up to 8,000.

How much does a good flatbed run for one of these?

How much are dually take off beds going for these days?

I appreciate all the quick responses.

I hate when people give you the run around like that. Thats the point where I usualy say this is what I will pay, take it or leave it. I only like to do straight sells, not take stuff off, remove this or that, and whats the new price. He should have made that clear earlier.

Yep, I'd probably walk after that, too. You weren't quite sure on the lower price, now you're up to a higher price.

How much do these trucks go for in good shape? 12? Less?

Sounds to high for me, and every truck ive bought with 200k+ miles need the front end rebuilt cause no one takes the time to fix it, the figure it pulls a little to the left no biggy, i wouldnt give him more than 6500 with the bed, but then again ive never spent more than 2k on any truck. I say go drive it see what you think and offer him cash money. Like pwrtripls1 said i hate when people give you the run around and dont want to do straight deals

This is giving me a headache.

I have yet to find one of these for less.

Rust is an issue with me. I want none.

The only other truck I would consider is a 2003 4x4 4 door long bed 6 speed with 3.73's.

Tell him you are willing to pay $7500 max and want everything with it, including the bed. He should deal with you because with the work it needs thats more than a fair offer. If he was to try to trade it in at a dealer ship he wouldnt get half that.

Nope, they were on some 12 Valves too. My fathers and my brothers '97's both have #53 blocks.

I saw a clean 03 as you describe go for 13k, had 180k on it with auto trans. I still don't think 7300 is bad, more reliable than the 03 (injectors on some) and not to mention simpler. If you don't think it's worth it, offer your highest price and walk away.

Not sure how much a flatbed goes for from a supplier, but the materials to build it can be from 4-700 depending how extravagant you go. I can't imagine a pre-built one going for less than 1500.

BTW KBB value is from $6200-7200, fair - good condition in my area.

Nah...just me being careless and not reading the whole darn post carefully. I still think that given what is in need of attention, as well as what *COULD* need attention that the price is too high.

Not sure if you have pulled the trigger or not, but I have been looking for one of these for quite some time now and I have to say there are better deals out there but they are hard to find. I would have to see the truck personally but, I would say go for it, and put a flat bed on it. I'm still on the lookout for one just haven't found the right deal.

Boy, I'm all over for sale ads today.

Found a 2003 6 spd 4 door dually 4x4 with a flatbed and tool boxes for 9,000 and a 2002 6 speed quad cab dually long box 4x4 for 9,000.

Both have 225,000 miles.

That is tough. At least the '03 would have a true 4 doors compared to the '02 with it's suicide rear doors . Although there's about the same amount of leg room in both models. I'd base my decision on how the 225k miles were put on either one of the trucks and how hard they were driven.... Maybe. If I bought either one, I'd probably rebuild the motor just because. That's just what I'd do though.

I'd go for the '03 over the '02. If you want a dually bed, you could probably sell the flatbed for more than a dually bed would cost, and 3rd gens ride way better than 2nd Gens. Plus, I'd rather have a Common Rail than a VP44.
