Need a quick reply to an easy question on swapping tranny

Ok, so I have a 91.5 w250 and my 518 went out on me.

I've found a 89 w350 with a Getrag that runs/drives and I can get it tonight...plans being to park it beside my truck, pull the tranny and everything and swap it into my truck.

The question I have is if everything is a direct swap...will the driveshafts and all work, even though it's an 89 1 ton dually vs my 91.5 3/4 ton non-dual?

If it's the same wheelbase, everything should swap over. IE, if his is club cab, and yours is too, it should be fine. I'm assuming it's regular cab since its an 89 though.

Sounds like you found a good deal man! You'll need to use his transfercase too.

The truck is a flat bed, so it might have started as cab and chassis. Would that effect the wheel base, or did the factory keep them the same length?

Sorry for the stupid questions...just want to make sure I get this right before I purchase!

Eather way all you will need to do is have the drive line worked. Mine cost me 150.00 to have both of mine done to fit.

Nice. I called and spoke with him and he measured the wheelbase for me and it's the same as my truck (131) so I think I'm good.

Another question: My truck is a 1 wheel wonder. If his has a limited slip, will the differential swap, assuming the same gear ratio...his is a dually, mine is not.

Tell me a little more? I was under the impression that these trucks already had pilot bearings..?

bushings, brash POS bushings are what came stock. If it has not already been done, and the imput shaft and pocket bearing are still tight you can just have the flywheel bored out for a bearing. if this is the original getrag it will have a bushing. if someone has been into, you might luck out and have a bearing already.

Can't do a direct swap as the dually's have 2 different width rear ends (depending on cab/chassis or a normal pick up). Either way, you could not do a direct swap of the entire axle since both are different than yours, but you may be able to swap out the inside of the pumpkin to have a LS rear end. You'd have to keep your axle shafts, etc.

I know the feeling brother. I feel much better when I get out of my TDi into one of my Cummins, but I do like the fuel mileage of the VW...
