Need New lift pump, ideas?
I tested my fuel pressure with a 10lb pressure guage tonight, and Im low...really low, pre-filter. I do not plan to add any more big fuel upgrades as I do heavy towing almost daily with it. A different turbo housing, maybe. I know I have 3 options. Stock diaphram, electric vane style, and piston pump. The cheapest I found a Carter locally was 79.99 and Summit has a Carter Eectric vane for $91.--, I havent called Cummins yet, but I know the Piston pump is close to 200 with all extras. Im leaning towards the diaphram or electric, which SHOULD be better for the long road ahead?
Also do will I need to position the electric pump closer to that tank?(ie road salt issues)

I only see two options, both from Cummins. One new stocker, two piston lift pump. The piston lift pump would be the best investment for your truck. Especially since you tow. It will keep that VE happy when its getting worked. Won't have to worry about it starving for fuel or an electric LP going dead on the side of the road, killing your VE, then having to pay for a rebuild.
You shouldnt be paying any more than 80 american for a stock diaprhagm pump. I would advise dropping extra for the piston pump, because I have just found my LP to be faulty, and leaking air to boot after just a year since I replaced it. I may have f'd my injector pump as a result. Just proof that a few $ ahead of time can save you many $ down the road. I didn't think such a new part could go, but the way things are made nowadays, you always have to worry. I hope all goes well with you truck.
I'm not sure how long a stock lift pump lasts but for $80 (or less if you shop around), it can't hurt to replace it.
The pump itself is located on the drivers side of the engine and it sticks out from the block about 2-2.5". Its down pretty far, more towards the firewall. I just replaced mine here 2 weeks ago and it was a lot easier than I thought. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined, its fairly easy. Undo the outlet line (big, stiff brass line) and disconnect the inlet line, which is a quick disconnect setup. Undo the 2 bolts on the block and out the pump comes.
Just be careful how much you tighten the inlet piece, just put it on snug and no more. I cracked my lift pump housing from overtightening it and it sucked air in, making it an absolute PITA to start up. I sealed it up with epoxy for now and works pretty good (starts right up, a little weak at first but it quickly catches up). I plan on replacing it with the piston style eventually, but for now it stays as is, I might buy another LP so I don't have to worry about possible leaks and weak start up which could be paving the way for a ruined VE.

How can you tell if the lift pump is bad? I just took mine off tonight, trying to find out why the truck apparently ran out of fuel (even though there is plenty in the tank). Obviously, I can tell the pump is working, because it pumps when I operate it by hand, or use the priming lever when it is on the truck. But, can it be working, but not putting out enough pressure? If so, how do you tell, and how much pressure is correct?

I have numbers for a delphi piston lift pump but I can't give the numbers out yet or for a good while until I fix the leaky fuel line as I can't get a good reading with my psi gauge cuz air keeps getting in. I got the pump for $80 CDN!

Best price I've found, I ran one for about a year and a half before I went to the piston pump. It's a Delphi pump, it made around 7 psi at idle post filter.

WOW, well I guess thats a good price. We dont have a full blown Cummins shop, so I have to go through a Heavy Truck Cummins Dealer. They said "let me check with Cummins and ill get back to you" yeah right...
Ill prob give that Delphi a shot. Dave, is that a direct bolt on?
