Need Help

So my truck has been acting up lately and keeps dieing on me when driving. I can be driving and all of a sudden ill lose all power and if i try giving it any throttle it just bogs and blows a bunch of white smoke. I thought it was because the fuel gelled up even though i put additive in it so i went under the truck and heated the lines up jumped in and it would fire right back up. But now it happened again so i did the same thing and it will start but ill lose power right away again and then die. So this time i loosened the fuel lines to the injectors and cranked it over to see if it was getting fuel and fuel was spraying out so its getting fuel. So i tightened the lines back up and tried it and it fired right up but again lost power shortly after again died. Then I just let it sit for alittle bit and tried again and it started right back up but lost power shortly after and died. Also there is a loud ticking noise coming from the fuel tank and if you grab the fuel line you can feel it pulsing.

I was thinking maybe the OFV Valve is plugged or something creating to much back pressure on the return but i dont have any pressure gauges to check.

Check the connection at the fuel shutoff solenoid. It should be on there nice and tight...Mark

I'm sure you have already done this but have you changed the fuel filter? Did it happen fast or get worse over time? Possible water in fuel?

It slowly loses power and to keep it running you have to give it just alittle throttle and if you give it to much it just bogs down like theres no fuel and if you let up on it all the way the engine dies. Just replaced the fuel filter not that long ago.

Fuel filter is the cheapest place to start after the wire connector on the FSS. Only takes one bad tank of fuel to ruin several filters. You can have plenty of fuel to run at idle but as soon as you put a load on it, starve it right out.

Obviously it isn't getting fuel. Usually that's a plugged fuel filter. Like he said, a tank of bad fuel will do it to ya. I made the mistake of filling up at Wolf Point, Montana. Took 2 fuel filters, a couple of cans of fuel additive, and 500 miles to straighten out. Maddening, I was pulling two trailers.

Other items possible:

Bad lift pump. Actually this alone shouldn't hurt that bad, but if anything else is wrong, this is usually the straw that breaks the back.

Pin hole leak between fuel tank and lift pump, or even in the pickup tube.

Collapsed rubber hose between the lift pump and the tank.

FSS failing.

Manual shut off lever in wrong position. (someone messing with you?)

IP (horrors)

Been filling up at the same place for a couple months now and its a kwik trip but i guess that dont mean nothing like you said Buddy you never now what you get today. I guess I'll just start out easy and cheap and do the fuel filter.

The VE IP doesn't have an "Overflow Valve" as the later IP's have. Ours is an "Overflow Restriction" (a simple fixed orifice). It's machined into the banjo-bolt of the fuel return fitting at the top/back of the IP case.
It has a built-in screen to protect the orifice from being plugged.

Did you ever check the connection at the FSS? I had very similar problems and it turned out to be an iffy FSS connection...Mark

The ticking noise you mention makes me think there's a problem with the lever inside the lift pump. Might be worth a look.

bad fule sorry bad pun water in fuel it would seem one can of diesel 911 and another new filter .I fill that up with 911 and new fuel if the tank at the kwik stop was filled shortly before you got there water could be mixed in with it
suggestion two the rod in the lift pumps are now held on with a brass ring it separates some times and you dont get a full pumping action as it slides down the shaft that is attached to the rubber on the pump and you get only a small amount of lift action
