hehe - Thanks guys...

For the people that don't know, my 4wd Toyota trail rig was featured in the Jan/Feb issue of CRAWL mag (6 pages) and my local 4x4 club had a writeup of our annual event in the March 2007 issue of 4WD and Sport Utility (6 pages).

What can I say - everyone needs their 5 mins of fame...

Gauges & pods showed up today....

Now I got something to do this weekend!

I haven't test fitted the Autometer steering column gauge pod plastic yet, but it looks like the second gen stuff is going to work perfect!

Gauges installed (well except the tack because I'm having problems with it).

From the pictures you can see that the 94+ steering column gauge pod fits over the OEM plastic nicely on my '92! From the pictures it looks like it blocks the view of the speedo but it really doesn't that bad. For me (6'2"), I can't see from about 90mph and beyond. Its not like you can't just shift your head to the side, let alone the fact that I don't need to be driving that fast anyways...

Heres some base line numbers I got today running the truck hard.
Mods - BONE STOCK, 280K+
Load - Empty
Throttle - WOT
Pyro - 1080 F slightly uphill (1020 F on flat ground)
Boost - 15.5 psi
Tranny temp - 180 F
Ambient Air - 45 F

I'm a bit surpised I have that much exhaust heat.... Since my goal is to mod the truck for Towing with decent gas mileage - I'm not sure how much I can turn up the pump from where it is now? Also the tranny temps seemed kinda high for being empty....

With 280K ,it is probably time for new injectors anyway, esp if it saw lots of idle or light load time. Ironically, in my experience, the trucks that are worked run better longer than the creampuffs. Same with your tranny- if it is totally stock, it needs work from the get-go. Put a tighter convertor and new injectors in, and let us know what happens.

A little timing bump may help your EGTs, too. Sometimes, I swear they just slap the pump on the engine at the factory and dont bother with timing.

Wow, I havent been on in quite some time, that ground strap deal may be whats wrong with my wipers as well. Sweet info.
Its really great to see someone having at it with good truck.
A second thing with your EGT's, A larger Downpipe will help lots, as with a better intake.
The boost and EGT numbers do seem a little fishey to me however. Go over those Intercooler connecting boots REALLY good. I have 335K on my 93 and have cracked boots, and even had one with hole in it I had NO clue about. As I didnt/dont have my guages installed yet (got the pyro now) I didnt even know. Boost loss can lead to high(er) EGT's and 15 seems a little low to me, Im sure others will know better but 20-25 should be about what a stock 1st gen 21CM exhaust housing should make.
Second thing, 16 isnt a bad option for an exhaust housing, (and what U plan doing) But I would option for one of the smaller ones, especially if its going to spend alot of time towing go for a 14 or 12.

Just my 2 cents, keep up the good work! This is a thread I'll be following
good to have u around, and WELCOME!

Looks good, how did you run your wires on the piller mount. My pod should be here this week so i hope to mount my guage this weekend.

I ran the wires under the OEM plastic up the pillar, then I drilled a hole in the OEM plastic into the cavity of the gauge pod.

I checked the valves per the Sticky and everything looks okay, or should I say fairly close.... So I didn't change anything - I just measured them. Unfortionately I could not find TDC, so I just had to watch each valve one at a time and do my measuremeasure that way. I know its not 100% correct but I know it will work for now.

Also I have determined that the tach I bought is not going to work so I have to return it.

tach calibration

Also I have determined that my stock boost numebrs look good compared to others...

Stock boost numbers?
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=116442

I also did some check on getting some new seats, and my local wrecking yards think they are made of gold or something! So that mod will have to wait until I hav emore cash to do something like that.

New seats!

I have also discovered that one of my tranny hard lines has a hole it. and a previous owner did a terrible fix - he used a hose clamp and a piece of rubber to plug the hole. I found that the hard way - I removed this random hose clamp and tranny fuild started leaking out.... anyways it took me probably an hour to get that plugged back up. So now I'm going to have to figure out a way to fix that right. I'm thinking about just cutting the hardline and installing another tranny cooler in that location since I hear those hard lines are really expensive and I've been wanting a bigger tranny cooler. for now I just put a new patch on that line like the previous owner did, I hate the idea of doing that but atleast now its not leaking.

Oh I also found out that my front u-joints are toast and need to be replaced.... Maybe I should or bought a cleaner less abused truck! Ugh....

Okay I got a bunch more stuff done, So heres an update.... I hope to get some pictures of this stuff uploaded soon.

I got a front chrome bumper for $35 from a buddy to replace the badly bend one that was on teh truck. I also got a rear chrome step bumper from a wrecking yard for $50, also to replace the badly bent rear one. Those installed fairly straight forward and actually made the truck look normal. I did beat most of the dent out of the bed corner because the old bumper push it in.

I also beefed up the reciever hitch by making a bolt plate that I welded to the top of the hitch that bolts to the factory receiver ball holes in the center of the bumper. I'm confident now that I won't ever have any issues with this hitch.

At the same time I also bought a nice drop receiver stinger (up to 10,000 lb trailer) and a heavy duty 1 1/4" shank, 2" dia ball (rated up to 7,500 lbs) to match the coupler on my tandem axle trailer (7K rating).

From the same buddy as above, I got a LIER Fiberglass Canopy (carpeted on the inside) for $110. Unfortionately its Red (truck is white) and its partially sanded down for re-painting and is missing a couple windows. I will have to either source some new windows or make them out of Polycarbonate. I know its not a great deal - but it gives me something to work with, My goal is to be able to sleep in the back of the truck eventually.

From another buddy I got a drop in plastic bed liner for $50. That will help hide the dents and rust in the bed.

I also wanted to do something about the crappy back up lights. So I wired up a relay, which is mounted in behind the driver side rear tail light, To power two 55W utility lights bolted under the rear bumper. I also ran this a relayed power wire to the Aux port on the 7 way trailer plug which will be wired to two more 55W utility lights bolted behind the rear axles of the car hauler trailer. That will make backing up in the dark MUCH nicer!

I also finally got around to repairing that tiny hole in one of the tranny cooler hardlines. I just cut out the bad section and replaced it with a piece of 1/2" tranny line with a couple hose clamps. Then I used another piece of hose to insulate the hard lines from rubbing each other and zip tied them to each other. Seems to be working fine so far, But I haven't really driven the truck much either.

I forgot to mention that I was finally able to find a free 16.5" = 8 lug dodge spare rim for the 33" spare tire I got (I bought the truck with no spare - Oops) and got that tire mounted on the rim. It took some time, but I was able to get it mounted back up under the bed. I hope I never have to use that! but if I do, atleast I now got a full size spare.

I ran into a major issue with my charging system just a few weeks ago - it quit working..... Anyways I'm not sure what I did, but it appears to now be fixed. More talk about that is here:

Truck not Charging = Code 41
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...d.php?t=141490

And for some reason several other issues aparently fixed themselves also. Sure its nice those items are fixed, but I'm not very confident they they won't resurface in the future, either....

Lastly, I removed all the fusable links and replaced them with actual fuses. I ended up using (1) 125 Amp AMG fuse and fuse holder for the alternator one which was a 10 ga Fuseable link. Then for the smaller 20 Ga (15A fuse) and 22Ga (10A fuse) fuseable links I found some nice 6 spade fuse holder. I actually ended up using two of thse fuse holders and the extra slots are/will be used to power my CB, Trailer Brake Controller, Back-up light relay and Head light relays.

Anyways, thats what I've been doing the last month or so... and I still got a bunch more other stuff to do.

What are you crying about Ken? I'd say you're pretty lucky - you just had the video slot on Xtreme 4x4 this past weekend. Nice to see that you still use that thing.

I don't know Ken - I personally hate spending a night working on something to only have it fix itself. I like knowing where the problem is, So I can fix it and never have to worry about it again!

Heres some pictures.....

New rear bumper and back up lights.

Re-enforced reciever hitch and Bumper and 33" spare tire.

Tranny Hardline Fix

No More fuseable Links!
