miles on original motor?

hey guys, im looking at an 89' 2 wheel drive with 116k on it. How many miles do yall have on your original motor? Can I expect more mileage or reliability out of this one over my 05? I know its a simplier design, therefore do you think its more reliable?

116k thats just barley broke in!

My odometer quit the second day I had my truck at 245,xxx so now its in the neighborhood of 310-320k

That trucks got lots of life left in it, well at least the motor does.

Is the truck in decent shape

Mine just turned 200k. I just did the head gasket and the cross hatch in the cylinders look like they were done yesterday, and not even a sign of a ridge yet.

262K on truck, 144K on the Ramcharger, and running perfect, no leaks. When they are maintained they will last a long time.

Around 260K miles on my engine... 190K of those were run hard to the governor with the original 727 non OD auto on the highway... Never had the head off, all original engine, usual maintenance only.

249,000 on mine, and I still wonder why anybody would buy anything other than a cummins. The only thing that stops them is their own nuts and bolts. haha!

280k + on the manual truck, had to put main bearings in at 260K as the thrust bearing came apart, something to watch out for as it is somewhat common.

240k on the auto, still has original black painted injector pump

300k on dad's manual, he disabled the clutch safety switch a long time ago so his thrust bearings haven't come apart

300k+ on sisters auto

None of them other than my stick truck have had any internal engine work done, other than valve adjustments.

The clock on mine is stopped at around 190K. Previous owner said it probably had around 200K, further research on his past "for sale" posts of the vehicle on various Cummins oriented forums indicates it's probably closer to 250K.

It lived a hard life, hauling overloaded trailers full of show cars up and down the interstates. In other words, what these motors are designed for.

The HG went out right after I bought it, in addition to the oil cooler. This was not the first time the HG had been replaced, as the one in there was a cheap non-Cummins brand that was, frankly, falling right apart. Now it has a Cummins HG, that is so over-engineered, it seems like it belongs on the Space Shuttle.

Like other members noted, the shiny cross hatching was still visible inside the cylinders, once I cleaned some of the carbon out.

Still haven't ironed out all the neglect and hard use this beast took, in addition to my clumsy shade-tree rescue of the HG and oil cooler situation, and yet it feels like it would tow a house without even breaking a sweat. It's fast, like a muscle car.

With some more TLC, I fully expect this motor to out-live the truck it is in. When that day comes, I'll put it in something else and run it some more. I've heard of people putting 500,000 or more miles on these before doing a complete rebuild.
