Making my Old Smokey Mount/BHAF (pics)

Well I bought the larger air filter (BHAF) a while back and just have been waiting for some free time to install it.

Well today a buddy and myself decided why not lets make it.

So we first took out the old air box and hose..

first pic shows old factiry air filter

this pic shows the stock air intake hose

Here is the box and the air tunnel out of the truck.

Then we took some comparison photos to show the factory vs. BHAF
wow that is a big filter

Then we got started on the making of the Old Smokey Mount

we took some sheet metal we had laying around.. and used the following diagram:
https://www.dieseltruckresource.com/...sort=1&cat=522

we did modify it a little.. instead of 1/2" break we made it 1.5" so it fits up under fender and help hold the mount in place with more metal..
we also moved the angle 45 degree cut up a little so that way I could leave the overflow coolant container in its stock position

Here is the mount in the middle of cutting the steel

this shows it all cut and bent up

then we made a steel strap to go around the filter to keep it in place

After it was all cut and bent I took some Silver paint I have and painted it all to keep it from rusting

Here is the finished mount done and in the truck

One more pic from different angle

Of course while I was under the hood I could not help myself so I turned up the HP screw ONE full turn and WOW what a difference these two things together did for my power, and of course it is really cool to here the turbo wind up

all in all it took the 2 of us 3 hrs to make the mount, paint, get it in truck and turn the power up.. Not a bad saturday

That looks great! Would you be willing to make one for me and if so how much? If you are not willing to make another one, can you tell me how much you moved the 45 deg angle to clear the coolant recovery bottle?

Thanks,
Chris

That looks really nice. Im working on making mine right now based on the same diagram. Itll be a little unique though. The metal Im using for the mount is something a little special. Ill hopefuly have it finished by the end of today.
By the way, where can I find the BHAF cross reference numbers?

can you get some more pics of it thru the wheel well?
is it closed?
how will it work in heavy rain or muddy / backroad situations?

I cut 3/4" up on the 45 degree area..

I had to force the mount past the coolant container, but it was really not much force at all.

Wheel well is sealed..

I have not heard of anyone having issues with rain..

as for Muddy roads I do my best to stay away from them.. and if I go down them I go slow.. that is what my Jeep is for

the other thing I forgot to list is I bought some of that black plastic door trim that I put on edge of the metal, to make sure I do not get cut by the edges..
