Lock up converter
Lock up converter
Has anybody ever thought about the possibilty of installing a lock up converter on the 518? I understand that the bell housing won't accomodate the extra length of the converter with lock up clutches but somebody could machine an inexpensive adapter to give you the length you need. Then you could have a switch to engage and disengage it. I suppose it would just be easier to just swap in a 47rh though. I guess I'm just brainstorming.
Swap in the 47RH like you said, you couldnt do the work to make it lockup, without a total redesign, youd need a new valve body with the oiling circuit, and input drum/shaft/front pump,+ many other things would need to be custom made.Dropping in a 47RH is too easy not to do it,if you want lockup that bad.

The bell is the same depth on all the 727 518 47 and 48 trannies. The extra length of the lockup converter was accomodated by the adapter between the motor and the bell. the only pieces needed to switch from non lockup to lockup are the valve body, the input shaft and the reaction shaft support. 727s do not have the hole through the case for the lockup-OD wiring plug though.
