Lift Pump Redux

I pulled my oem mechanical lift pump about 3 weeks ago, after it croaked. I finally had some time today, to try and install the carter stock replacement from NAPA. For some reason I am having a heck of a time getting the replacement pump on. I can't seem to get the back 8mm bolt on, near the firewall. I picked up some slightly longer bolts today at the hardware store, maybe that will help?
Its been a while since I replaced a mechanical fuel pump. Last one I did, was my old 70 Bronco about 10 years back. I had no trouble then. Since I have misplaced my FSM, can some one refresh my memory, on the proper procedure for replacing the mechanical fuel pump? I rotated the cam today, by turning the alternator pulley, but still can't get the new pump to bolt up Don't you need to put the fuel pump rocker under the cam lobe, then push up (compress the rocker) and bolt up the pump?

Try rotating the eng a little, sounds like the cam lobe may be up on the high side. I just finished reading ur post and see you already done this.

Bencie,
I'm beginning to think the NAPA pump might need a little filing - with a rat tail bastard file, of the furthermost hole (one near firewall). The hole spacing on the fuel pump casting, might be off a few hundred thousands? I didn't have any trouble with the mechanical fuel pump on my old Bronco.
I wish I would have keep the old pump (threw it out), as I would have checked the hole spacing with a micrometer.

I spoke with my cousin in NE tonight on the phone. He has an old early 80's F250 IDI diesel farm truck. He told me that when he replaced his lift pump on the old Ford, that the cam lobe must be straight up. You then need to bump the fuel pump arm against the cam lobe, push up, and bolt up your two bolts.
I think my problem lies with my crappy old 60W shop light. It doesn't really trow enough light down by the fuel pump area. I got the light as close as I could to the pump, and it's still hard to see. I bet the cam lobe isn't facing up. I will try and pick up a cordless LED shop light tomorrow.

The flange on the replacement pump i got from napa, was terrible, it was uneven, casting lines and rough, took quite a bit of filing to square it up

Houndog,
I think the hole spacing is off on my NAPA pump? Anyhow; I assume that the cam lobe should be at like 8 o'clock, instead of straight up, as my cousin mentioned on his Ford IDI. I lost my FSM, so bear with me here folks.

Today I got the Delphi pump in, when I rotated the cam lobe to BDC. It went in like Flynn! In defense of the NAPA pump, I had the lift pump upside down So; there isn't anything wrong with the NAPA pumps bolt spacing.
I ordered a FSM CD from Geno's tonight, so this doesn't happen again! When I finally realized I had the prime handle facing down, I figured I was putting the pump in upside down.
