LED Question

I'm sure i have asked before, but never got a response, at least i dont think. i replaced ALL my exterior lights with LED. Now my turn signals dont work. i have tried the flasher from superbrightled.com and it does not work. i also tried an electronic flasher from the auto parts. it allows the signals to work (but at a very slow flash) and it will not let them work when the parking lights are on.....any suggestions on what i can do and what flasher may work...a part number would be great. thanks

I tried a bunch of different flashers and never got one to work. I ended up putting a ballast resister across the rear brake/signal bulbs. I know, it sort of defeats to purpose of LEDs, but it solved my problem AND it doesn't increase the load on the light switch.

I put a "no load" flasher in mine and they work just fine. Some electronic and HD flashers are also supposed to work also.

When I did LEDs on my Jeep, I put in ceramic resistors from Radio Shack. They increase the load to something comparable to regular bulbs. If you want the p/n, PM me and I'll look it up for you. It takes some soldering to do them, but you put them in the pigtail harness that came with your LEDs.

My first thought would be either the combo switch or the headlight switch - in that order.

If you didn't replace your side marker lamps with LEDs then I think the signals work normally. This is also why you won't get normal operation with the headlights on. The side marker lamps ground the other direction depending on the light switch position. With an LED, that just won't work.

Had the same problem when I switched to all LED's.
The emergency flashers would work no problem, even with the lights on...
The turn signals would only work when the lights were off.....

Then, one day I was rewiring the gauges on the dash and lost track of the lead the went to the gauge light. So - I turned on the lights and checked the wires until I found the correct one...Until you see the rats nest of wires I'm trying to clean up, you wouldn't understand the problem......But -
back to the LED turn signals...
The lights are on and I'm under the dash chasing wires when I start hearing this clicking....
Out pops my head and the darn turn signals are working....
Turn them off. Turn them on - no work. Light up a cigarette and convince myself I really did hear them working earlier....
Then they started working !!!
The wait was about 25 - 30 seconds and they were flashing at about 10 second interval.

Kind of long but I just need to turn them on earlier than I usually do - which isn't very often. If an idiot is following me close I'll use them but that's about the only time I do. Or if I'm turning left and there's no turn lane...
Really - IF you're in the left turn lane - what are you going to do ???
If you're turning right and there's no one behind you, does the guy coming the other direction really care??

I've been looking for the flasher unit box because the flasher doesn't have a number on it....Seems it was an 'electronic' flasher...When I took it apart to see what could cost 12.00 all I saw was a relay with a capacitor across the coil....But it works where the stock unit won't....
OH - and the real electronic units with a 555 timer IC in them - All the ones I opened to look at used normally OPEN relay contacts - we need normally CLOSED !!!!

If anyone finds one of the electronic untis with normally closed contacts, let me know - please.....

I have a flasher like the one you describe on my Emergency Flashers; it is an Echlin that I got from Napa years ago.

It has a simple L/C timer circuit, L/C stands for Inductor (coil) / Capacitor.

The Tridon's are what I've been looking at....
Problem is nobody knows whether the relay contacts are N.O. or N.C. --
EVEN the Tridon website.

I think I've got one at home. I'll take a look at it. It didn't work for me however. So I suspect the contacts are N.O.
