Leaks

Hey all, anyone know what the part number is for the rear main kits from cummins? I have a leak coming out of my rear main. How hard of a job is it to do this? Should I just pull the motor or should I drop the transfer case as well as the transmission? I have a 10,000lb lift, I don't have a transmission jack though.

I would have to find the number, but it is easier to pull the tc and tranny, but you need to support the rear of the engine with a floor jack. I use a motorcycle jack that works great for the tc and tranny. I first pull the tc then the tranny. The seal is placed dry and the kit comes with a drift to get it positioned correctly. I didn't check your sig to see what truck you have, but if it is manual, it is a good time to check the clutch and throwout bearing. IIRC, you rebuilt your getrag, so yours should be good...Mark

My understanding from what mm wrote is that the seals he had made were designed to accommodate greater misalignment between the seal carrier and the shaft. Chronic leakage of the rear main seal on these engines is most often due to the carrier being installed improperly at the factory. If you remove the carrier, install the seal off the engine, and then reinstall the assembly using the seal to align the carrier, you should not have any problems.
