Question K&N air filters........are they really bad for my engine?

I've heard some stories and talk about K&N filters being worthless and how they allow dirt to penetrate through into the engine. I have also heard that the gauze material on K&N's is easily sucked in from the turbo?........ I would love to hear some opinions and thoughts about these filters. I just installed a "hand-me-down" cone shaped K&N air filter on my 93'. I would like to know if I should pull it off and go back to stock or if it's feasable for general use.

I put a K&N in my truck and after reading about them on here I wish I would have gotten the standard paper BHAF instead, although I have not noticed it they say that it leaves a residue on the impeller wheel on the intake side of the turbo but like I said I haven't noticed it. You got it for free so if it's in good shape I would say leave it alone but watch it and if you see something out of the ordinary after checking get rid of it in exchange for the cheaper BHAF, that's what I'm doing.

If you keep it clean I believe it is ok. The real question is are you the type to keep it clean? Or are you going to remember needing to clean it too late too many times? Because the design will flow great, and flow a great amount of dirt if unkept. Cheap insurance on the BHAF, I don't think you give up enough flow to make the added expense in intial investment and ongoing maintenance worthwhile. My .02

I've got a K&N, and I'm about to ditch it. I'm getting all of the stuff together now to make a mount for the BHAF. I didn't now that the K&N's had issues until I read about them on DTR. My truck has had the K&N on it for years, so I hope it didn't do any damage.

I ran K&n for 3 almost 4 years with no issues. Only reason I swapped was to easily mount the bhaf.

I ran a K&N now I run a ASA cold air system for a first gen. which uses a K&N type cone filter. If anyone is looking for a K&N for a first gen stock air box PM me.

I've had myn for a few years now without any problems. I think the main reason people see oily build up on their impellor wheel is because they put to much oil on the filter.

Mine had a K&N on it when I got it and I got rid of it ASAP.
I had heard way to many bad storys about them.
Im sure if you live in the city and never or rarely drive on dirt roads youd be ok with one but there are plenty of fields and backroads back home where I roam and just didnt like the idea of running an air filter that I could practically see though on my truck.

Is that a AFE filter on your ASA? How do you like it? because I am planning on getting the same exact thing for mine
