Just Wanna Say Thanks and need info (long)
Got my truck working again thanks to Wannadiesel (again
)!
It was the hydraulics and after 4 hours of messing with it, it worked! Ok now I need some info. When I went to get the bushing in a town about 10 mins from work, I saw a rebuild shop and lo an' b'hold, it had a big ole Cummins sign out front. The info I need is the part #'s for the 3200rpm spring and maybe he has the wiring harness for a tach?? The other thing is this.
I was reduced to driving a '87 Gmc 1500 Suburban with a 350 TBI, 4x2. Great vehicle just that it gets MAYBE 13 mpg on a good day.
As I was driving to work I got this great idea.
(Thinking is hazardous to my health
) Get a Cummins and give the old beast a much needed heart transplant.
Here is my shopping list.
1987 GMC Suburban
4bt or 6bt 1st Gen Cummins turbo engine
new transmission plate on said engine
2"-3" body lift (?)
new motor mounts
new tq converter
new 4" exhaust
new fuel lines (do I really need this?)
new front shocks (maybe air bags?)
some new wiring (from battery to solenoids, to starter, from alternator)
Anything else? I could get a 93 W250 5spd with a wreaked cab for $1500. The Suburban we already have. This Suburban also has the rare OD auto tranny (at least the most expensive one to rebuild
but it only has 4 gears) not the turbo 400 that most others came with. I know where I could possibly get 3/4 ton springs from another suburban that had the 6.2 diesel.
Am I missing anything that would be a huge cost besides what I stated here? I could machine a new tranny plate at a machine shop where I work sometimes, so that also takes care of the metal needed. I can also fabricate mounts for the radiator and intercooler and the engine.
Would a 4bt fit better than a 6bt? This thing has enough room to fit a 454 and still have a place to sit to change the spark plugs.
Also would the fuel line being that they are setup for throttle body injection, be used? It has a 32 gallon fuel tank and maybe a 3.54 rear end. Would these work also?
Thanks for all the advice in advance.

You will find all the conversion answers here:
www.Cummins-Conversion.com
There are a few Cummins/Suburbans already done over there.
The best advice is just jerk out the old gas-burner and stick the Cummins in there; the rest will work itself out.
