just told a P-pump will bolt right in place of VE?????

A guy at a local diesel shop here just told me he bolted a 97' P-pump right in place of the old VE. He said all he changed was the injector lines. Is this possible? I was under the impression you had to change the whole gear case on the front of the engine.

My truck has been broke down needing a new pump for 5 months now and I would like to get it going. That or I'm hauling it to a junk yard cuz I'm tired of not being able to find replacement parts for a first gen.

Well heck if you're going to do that, i'll give you scrap price!!

But um yeah, the p-pump and the ve-pump have a different mounting bolt pattern, plus the p-pump gear case is built heavier to handle the extra weight of the bigger pump.

Of course this is not first hand knowledge, just what i've heard.

Just called the smartest diesel guy I know and the guy who told me this is just plain dumb. I also got a quote on a P-pump conversion and a fully built auto and it would be @$10k installed. Good god I need a 4th job at that rate. lol

Maybe he meant that he bolted a '97 p-pumped motor in in place of a VE pumped motor. I could see that working.

A rebuilt VE shouldn't be that hard to find. What parts are you having trouble finding or is the trouble affording them?

No trouble affording them, I have a couple $K each month to play with. I have trouble finding things like a :

A new grill
new interior trim around the headliner
new front fender
new tail gate
new rear bumper
new front bumper
new windshield wiper setup (the whole thing broke, shafts and all)
new fuel tank sender.

I could go on but you can go to any autozone and get these type parts for any year ford, chevy, honda. ect.....

why cant I just walk in and order all these new things I need. I hate havingto wait on someone to wreck there truck so I can maybe fix mine.

Because these trucks are 15+ years old now and they just don't make stuff for them these days. Not many left on the road.

Ok. We need to start a group project. All us 1st Gen'ers need to ban together and help pwrtripls1 find the parts he needs.

No reason a salvageable 1st Gen CTD should go to the scrap yard.

Don't crush 'em. Restore 'em!

1st one on the list, aside from a pump...the grill

i did a conversion for my buddy you ahve to replace the front cover the p pump has a bigger bolt pattern than the ve, you need front cover, injector lines, intake horn, fuel filter canister for return line to hook to, and a fuel pump.

I haven't verified any of this but a google search says that you might check here for a grill http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/se...294966945+9214

and a fender http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/se...294966945+9206

and a bumper http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/se...294966945+9278

and a tailgate http://www.autopartswarehouse.com/se...294966945+9451

and that's just from one site.

Here's a fuel sending unit http://www.moparpartsamerica.com/par...layCatalogid=0

and it looks like they have body parts too. Didn't compare prices.

You'll probably have to buy it in pieces to get the wiper assembly unless you get it at a salvage but here's the arm and they have motors, pumps and other wiper parts too. http://www.moparpartsamerica.com/par...layCatalogid=0

Hope this makes you feel like it's not quite so hopeless.

I know the feeling, parts are getting a little harder to get a hold of. I agree I don't know why you can still buy parts for same year ford and chevy, but not dodge. Hang in there you will get her back on the road.

You can still get most of the trim for that truck new. Call Moparone or other dealership. Not cheap, but in typical fashion they will discontinue them about the time everyone needs the parts!

Factory or aftermarket body parts are made.

I got one side mostly cut loose but still have the other side to work on. Its a PITA trying to work the grinder in there. With the cooler weather now though I am starting to spend more time outside on projects. I needtohurry up and get it off though cuz I'm going to pull the whole front clip off when I replace the pump. I'm droping the 2nd gen IC in and new fenders on then too. And new grill.

Thanks for the help finding parts guys, maybe I'll be ready for a new paint job by christmas.

dodge has the front grill surround and the inserts. just bought one. if you wrecked one of these the body shop wouldn't have any trouble repairing or replacing the parts. shouldn't be such a big deal.
