How did it go out? With a bang, or did it just come out of overdrive.

the tranny fluid smells burnt and its a brownish red. and the od was acting up before it went out. if it was something electrical i would be happy.

what it was doing was this:
1/2/d work fine. get to about 55 od would either work fine when i hit the gas pedal or it would slow the truck down as if i was going against a 70mph headwind.

Sorry I was distracted when I was posting and forgot you put that info in the post. Look in the sticky and see how to test the tps could very well be your problem. If it is look into a potentiometer it works well and is a lot cheaperthan a tps.

The tps has nothing at all to do with lights. There is a test procedure in the sticky for the tps and there is also instructions for a potentiometer.

When I originally posted the TPS/POT Fix, 04-01-2004 (here), I shared it with everyone for FREE. I see someone has taken my idea and is selling a kit now - first I heard of it.

In my opinion, I'd just go ahead and click the link in my signature and fix it for less than $10.00, the way it was intended to be. If you want to spend an extra $30 or so bucks to save yourself the time of cutting a wire and soldering 6 joints, then okay...

Will this mod still make my tranny shift into OD even if my speedo is DOA?

I'm not sure if your's is the same so I'll just offer this. On my 93 D250 2wd the OD would quit on a regular basis until I located the problem. I had a bad electrical connection on the side of the tranny. On the driver's side, about mid ways front to back, look for some wires running into a plug. Check that connection and take it for a drive. I believe I had the 518 tranny.

The potentiometer will not fix od if the speedometer is not working.
