jackleg!
jackleg!
I've had this truck for a month. The parking brake wasn't working and I have a spongy brake pedal also was leaking a gear oil out of the passenger rear wheel. I tore it down this afternoon to get it fixed. The previous owner had a shop/mechanic install "new brakes" and some other misc items. Obviously this mechanic had never been into a 3/4-1 ton axle. The axle nuts were both beaten off with a screwdriver. The passenger side had a screw instead of a locking pin. Ooh la la someone saved a $1.49 there. Neither park brake cables were attached...to anything. I'm not a mechanic but at least things work when I get done. Clearly the mechanic who received $75 an hour to complete this work was grossly negligent. This is the second first gen I've had to rework the rear brakes on. The other the PO claimed the rear axle had recently been "rebuilt". The one I test drove before that the owner claimed that the brakes "needed to be bled". I'm starting to understand the language.
Boy that looks familiar. When I pulled mine down the first time I found a nail instead of the screw in the passenger side but at least the parking brake was hooked up.
I now use(except in a roadside emergency) new nyloc nuts, new tab lock washers and blue lock tight.
I have even tried drilling and tapping the nut for set screws and that didn't work. It caused the nut to crack.
