Intercooler $$$ ???

Hi ,

- The probblem :Intercooler leak

I just added the smaller turbo housing ,but was informed that my intercooler is leaking...not bad enough to worry about right at this moment- they say, but don't forget about it!

I'm told the intercooler is $1000.00 Canadian
and the install is another $500.00

I beleive these to be for a stock item (but not sure)?

Are these Good .Fair ,Poor - Pricing ?

And, what is the intercooler every one wants in their truck...is there a name brand to have vrse's another?

(In the car world Spearco is supposed to be one of the best ... but, none of their web addresses are working ... so I guess they weren't that good?)

Thx for your time
Brad

I believe the intercoolers have been discontinued by Mopar. I have seen stock 1st gen IC's on E bay escalating on price recently. Many people have adapted an IC from a 2nd gen. Try a search on this conversion. The 24 valve IC is supposedto flow better than the 12V 2nd gen IC.

Did they say where it was leaking from? A lot of intercoolers in general will develop pitting in the necks of the end tanks.

If this is the case, you can remove the IC and clean the corrosion off of the neck. This will normally expose some minor pinholes in the neck.

Use a two part titanium epoxy on both the inside and outside of the neck to seal the pinholes. Let it dry overnight and re-install.

I've done this on 5 or 6 intercoolered gas motors with good results. No leaks through about 30psi of testing.

Can't say I've had the chance to try it on a TD yet but the same idea should apply.

Thank you for the reply's.

I'll check out the OEM site.

I've been to Piers.

I wasn't told where it was leaking ... the younger guy felt it was very important to do the repair ASAP, the older guy says it's not a big deal yet - but don't forget about it.
So I feel I have time to check out a few possibles and try to get some prices to compare with - before I bite the bullet on $1500.00

But my sources don't seem to have much knowledge of IC's so I'm coming to the forum to where others have trucks like mine of the same age ... I can't be the only guy with a linking IC, I hope. LOL

If you can add anything at all ? Prices , web sites etc .
That would be great...thx

don't worry too much...

but also, don't spend $1500 on a stock intercooler... you can get a good used one on ebay for $100 or so... $500 to install is a little steep IMHO.

You need to pop by or give me a call. I've got some plate and fin 1st gen intercoolers here. Much better flow that a tube and fin, we installed one in Harry's truck....twin turbo'd first gen pushing 60lbs boost, no leaks no problems and flowed so much better, that his water temp problem went away. And no, they are not $1500.00, not even $1000.00....but they are $750.00

Don't spend $1500 on a stock intercooler...Banks has one that flows better for "only" $900.....I was going to get one but for me (since my intercooler wasn't leaking) I thought the $$ would be better spent on the DTT89 TC and shift kit....If I were you...check w/ Banks first. Hope this helps.

You sure you got the right Piers?
There right across the river from us. Talk to Harry or Piers, both are stand up guys.
I'm sure they can help you out. I think I read here a few months ago of a member that installed a IC from piers that was supposed to work to 100+ psi.

Considering they are both in BC, I'm pretty sure that price is Canadian $.
