that's funny about "get a common rail" comment, I remember a lot of people saying (a couple years ago) that they were worthless as well and that you should only get a P7100 truck, that is until the dual fueler setups hit the market ...

In todays world a lot of the So called techs that work on these truck probably have never pulled a wrench on a mechanical truck . I would be rich on how many times I have heard the BOOK ONLY goes to 1994 what year is it again ?
I am not saying All techs but a lot You would be well advised to read and ask a lotta questions here there are some extremely knowledgeable and genuine people on this forum. Good luck

Let me see, there are several dozen 1stGens across the continent (with VE pumps) making 400+ at the wheels, some at 500+, and a few at 600+. So, no, it isnt a waste to hop them up. The stock 12mm rotor will supply enough fuel through the right injectors to destroy the drivetrain, to say nothing of the 14mm H&R.

Bigger injectors will ease pressure spikes on the VE, helping it last longer and make the power reliably. If you hop it up to the 350 you want (not that hard, really), GET A FUEL PRESSURE GAUGE!! And likely a supply system upgrade- either low pressure piston lift pump or an electric aftermarket unit. WIth pump tweaks and stock injectors, some guys can take thier fuel pressure down to zero- not good for the internals of the VE esp if you are making double the stock power.

Good luck, have fun, and show the other guys what they dont know.

It wasn't Huckabee was it? He rebuilt the VE on my Toyota Diesel and I talked to him several times. He might be an injection pump god to them but I was way underwhelmed by him. Told me that BioDiesel had less lubrication than dino diesel and was ruining pumps all over America.

I think you need to take a ride a in a 1st Gen that has these mods done to it and all your questions will be answered. There isn't a common rail out there I'd trade my old mechanical VE on. I don't need no stinkin computer to make power.

I agree, I love these old mechanical pumps! easy to tweak and no computer crap that i have to deal with! I stopped in to look for an internal pump part for my VE at Industrial Injection this weekend in Salt Lake City, Utah. I lost a part of the "tophat" while I was takin my pump apart last week to take my afc lever out. So i stopped in to see if they had one. They asked me for the part number and I said i didn't know cuz i lost it, so they brought a diagram up on the computer and i showed them what part it was. They checked the number and said that it was obsolete and that they didn't make them anymore. So they couldn't get one and they couldn't tear one out of a junk pump cuz the pump guy wasn't there. And then the guy asked me how I lost it and i said I took my pump top off to take the afc lever out, and then he was like what? you took your pump apart? your gonna blow your pump up if you tear it apart and dont have it checked out and done right and recalibrated! And i said no, I have already done it before when i put my 366 spring in and it has been fine. And then he was like, well i guess you are a lucky one. And I was just thinkin, this guy doesn't know crap about these old pumps. I mean I know if you mess with the head of the pump, that you should have it done right and recalibrated and the precision right and everything, but just takin the pump top off to do some mods wont hurt it. It just makes me mad that these guys that know all about these newer fuel pumps think they know everything about these older pumps, and they don't. I think I know more about these old pumps than they do!

My .02; Stay current on this board use the search button, stickeys and ask questions. For about 1/10th of what it costs to buy a latest and greatest diesel pickup you can ride around in a very good performing first gen Dodge. For less than $100 you can tweek the pump, add a gov spring, do a swiss air box, ditch the muff and learn a lot about your truck. Throw in a 100 bucks more n you got a really cool BAAF too! By then you will probably have a good idea what you want to do about gages, turbo, lift pump and injectors. If you pay attention to these boards you can save a ton of money and trouble. I would beware of somebody that wants a pile of money and/or tells you these trucks wont run. I had all ready started reading these boards before I talked to a Dynamite Diesel associate. He never saw my truck or asked me about current mods or tune. After he contacted the DD shop he told me that the first step was a $2500 ip rebuild and a $800 set of injectors. Wrong answer for many reasons! Wont be back. So... learn from those who have gone before you and beware of carpetbaggers!

Crossy`s Son makes a good point. If I had it to do again I probably would have spent my coin on a good torque converter/shift kit before anything else but thats just my opinion. And another vote for using the search, there is a TON of great reading to be found here! As far as POD`s, they are cheap and make great power for the $$$ invested but they stink/haze at idle and arent the best choice for towing. Again, if I were to invest I`d give a long look at some of the other injector choices out there there`s alot more stuff available nowadays.

This truck is not going to tow anything its just a toy, and BELIVE ME I HAVE DID THE SEARCH AND HAVE READ EXTENSIVLEY, but you never really get a soild answere cause evreyone has an opinion. The truck has an NV4500 swap with a new zoom clutch, so it should handel a little more power id say, if not ill know what wasnt strong enough, wont I. LOL. Thanks guys for trying to answere my questions!
