Im in a bind, I need some input
Well im converting my auto to a getrag and so far im about 1k dollars into the prjoect....
I bought pedals, master/slave cylinder and rebuilt 2wd getrag for 700 bucks....
Then I bought the rear shaft and housing to convert to a 4wd transmission from zbag.....
I thought I could put the shaft in and slap the transmission in and be done with it, but being a little inexperienced i found out I either need to modify my tcase or get one from a 5 speed truck to make it work.
to modify my tcase to make it work is about 400 bucks or sell mine and find another one from a 5 speed truck...and money is tight
Do yall think it would make more sense to keep pursuing this conversion or have my auto built for 1200 bucks and sell all my 5 speed stuff?

Getrag all day long. Wipe your rear with a nonlockup built anything auto.
You'll find it will cost more than $400 to modify your 205. Possibly for the machine work cost. But then the input shaft and bearing, front 'bowl', and coupler, you're looking at more than $400 for those items. Best bet is to find a 205 that was behind a getrag.

Okay, the way I read it, you HAVE a 2WD Getrag and money is tight; were I in your boots, I would lay the transfer-case and 4x4 drive-shafts in the corner, slap in a 2WD drive-shaft and good to go.
When things looked a little better on the financial front, and I wasn't crowded into making a wrong decision, then I would gather up what I needed to put the 4x4 stuff together.
Another option, and my favorite option for numerous reasons is to install a DIVORCED transfer-case.
A divorced transfer-case cares not what is in front or behind it.
I would rather have a busted Getrag laying in the bed, than to have five brand-new automatics ready to use, but that's just me.

I agree with BearKiller. NO auto and a divorced transfer case. It seems the 2 wheel drive transmissions are easier to locate anyways. And you will love the 5sp vs the slushbox. You will wonder where all this power came from after you get it converted, you didn't gain power your auto just lost it. Good luck with your ole truck.
I second BearKiller on the finances of it: go 2WD for now, when money gets better, add your pieces to make it 4WD.
I would add: find a NP205 that was 5-speed (that is 29 spline input), and make a good one out of best parts from both. I paid $600.- for one - when the economy was roaring - and my 23-spline guts were in better shape, so I swapped a bunch of guts, put new bearings, seals and gaskets.
I think A518 are great dock anchors...

Bearkiller, he said he already bought the 4wd mainshaft and tailhousing from Zbag. That said I would convert the getrag to 4wd and source a 29 spline 205. My guess about early Dodge gasser 205's is that they're all 23 spline input, even on a divorced case. I would like to know for sure. I doubt a divorced 23 spline 205 would hold up to the abuse a 2wd getrag/Cummins combo would throw at it.
Well I got lucky and found a guy that needs a 205 from an auto and has a 205 from a 5 speed so thats how im goin.
And the only way to make a 23 spline 205 work with a getrag is too machine it so it will except a bigger bearing and replace the shaft with a 29

sounds like a good exchange. One word of caution: the NP205 29 spline you're getting, is it coming out of a Dodge truck or out of some rock crawler thang? Reason I ask is that, one (the rock crawler) will have taken a lot more abuse than the other, but there is nothing out there that can't be rebuilt...

I don't know about handling the "abuse" as I usually figure that is more of a driver thing than an engine issue, but as soon as time allows, I am gonna find out first hand what a divorced 205 will do behind a 2WD Cummins/Getrag, as that's what is in the 1972 F250 Hi-Boy that the non-I/C 1st Gen. Cummins/Getrag sitting beside it is going in.
Pieces may fly, we'll see.
Being a standard tranny owner my whole life.....I have to take your side. With a well built auto, no G rag/4500/5600, or G56 will out shift the auto's. THAT HAVE A GOOD CLUTCH..Their just too **** slow. But I will add this to the members statement. In a drag race....... Have not seen one of the 1st gen owners out there with a Lenco/Liberty.....YET.
