Question I think my head gasket went bad

MY 89 NON IC engine started to puff, puffpuff, puff, puff, puff, to the timing of the engine out past the turbo, and is quite a bit smokier, Idaling rough and lower, I loosened the injector lines to each cylinder, and foound that #6 made no difference, so i swapped the #5+#6 injecters and tried again, same thing, I have no extra engine noise, No tapping, Looked inside the bores of 5+6, Looked cleanish, No oil in the coolant, No coolant in the oil, Just the rough idle and the puff, puff, puff noise,,, Is this a head gasket????? Just this week i installed a stage 3 HTT turbo, I have been running 45 lbs boost for the last few months, and the new HTT setup really lowered my EGTs by about 200-300*, DID i bloww the head gasket???
Engine has 316K miles
Is it a tough job??
How long does it take??
And how much for the gaskets which i will need?
And where do i get em???
Thank you for your responses and suggestions on what else it could be!!
Peter

You might have a stuck,or warped valve.I just went through that, with my combine engine, and it made some wierd sounds, plus loseing.a cylinder.

Yeah, that's sounding valve-ish...or at least a loss of compression. Do you see a lot more than usual coming out the blowby tube? Maybe a hole in the piston...

I will go and check the blowby, There was no noise that i heard, I checked for valve operation and gap, All is ok there, Engine still makes good power, But is missing a beat until about 1500 rpm, then feels ok, I had to drive about 2-3 miles after noticing the issue, No smoke at idle, More when i am accelerating, But can drive without smoke, and didn't seem to see any oil in piston when i looked inside,,,,,
Seems odd that an intake valve would go faulty before an exhaust valve,
Keep the suggestions coming ! ! ! ! !
Peter.

There is no noticable blowby at all, even when revved a bit,
The noise in the intake corrosponds to a tail pipe noise as well, Oil doesn.t smell like fuel,
Can the cummins blow a head gasket cylinded to cylinder??
I looked at head gasket pics, And they seem rhobust in that area,
Peter.

A guy out by me had one do that, I think its a rare case though.

Check your valve adjustment and pushrods, make sure none of them are bent.
After that I would pull #6 injector again and pressurize that cylinder with air, might want to back off the valve adjustment all the way off. See if its leaking air into the intake, exhaust or another cylinder.

That's a good suggestion, Mike.
