I was right, almost

My "Good Old Warhorse" fooled me a bit: the brakes were fine but the dvrs side front wheel bearings were shot like it sounded. The brake fluid I thought I saw was likely oil bled out of the bearing grease. Still she got me home as always. Someone in DTR rightly said,"Chrome don't get you home". These bearings were chewed up worse than I've ever seen, yet it steered OK and it was only the noise and soft pedal (wobbling wheel was pushing my caliper piston back). The caliper was REAL easy to get off! The book says repack these bearings @ 2yrs or 24000mi. Well I was at least double that since I replaced the bearings and never looked at them since . While gazing at the book I also noticed two-year change for tranny oil, diff and antifreeze so I'll be busy for the next while. And I should push out a bunch of brake fluid on all four corners. Still I don't begrudge the work and cost cuz according to the BK principle of repair money better than payments I'm getting added reliability with every $$$. I haven't costed this out, but I've run about 20,000km over seven years, and repairs have been about $3000- so with just transportation, never mind an incredible amount of work and towing, it's been a pretty cheap runner, ... Plus I just feel good driving it, ... ;->

I've always stood by the saying that maintenance is cheaper than payments but...........you've got to do the maintenance.

Quite right, and embarrassing to boot considering that in one of my previous lives I was "Mr Preventative Maintenance" for a huge fleet. Gotta walk the walk .... Incidentally I had two studs break taking nuts off, both were with cone-shaped nuts. Book ALSO says around 200 lb-ft for the cones and up to 350 for the flange type. Lotta good stuff in that book! I'm not sure I'll go near 350 lb-ft, but I set my torque at 100 into my 3:1 multiplier so it'll be upwards of 300. BK made the point about stretching the studs, and I just saw it, ....
