I Got A Paint Job Paid For By Dodge.....

as I had what they called "delaminating paint" (Id'd by tiny little specks of paint coming off that looks like tiny rock chips all over. A friend who does automotive painting saw my hood and remarked to me about what was happening and suggested me contacting Dodge/Chrysler so see if they'd do anything about "their paint (job)". Also my truck is dark blue and silver and it was BOTH colors that failed and not just one particular color. But their silver paint was NOTORIOUS for failing....) on my truck described in my sig. They didn't paint the whole truck, they only painted what was failing. So, I don't know if some of you ORIGINAL OWNERS know that you may be eligible for a paint job paid for by the manufacturer, Dodge/Chrysler. That was the one main catch of their program...you had to be the one that bought the truck new. Well, I was the original owner who purchased the truck new. So once that was established they were a little bit more civil towards my complaint. So here's my suggestion....if you're the guy or gal that bought that new Dodge pick up (or probably any vehicle they made with failing paint) way back when and the paint is failing, proceed to your nearest Dodge dealer or call the regional Dodge factory reps and make a request that they repaint the vehicle. You may get what I got.... a repair/paint job on faulty original factory paint. Good luck!! Chuck

Thanks! But according to the guy who helped me at the dealer, this hasn't really been that uncommon as they've repainted "many vehicles". Of course, if one doesn't know about their "program" for repaints then yes it would seem rare that the customer wins. I did try to tell them that if they're NOT going to repaint the complete truck then I'll just wait till all the paint fails (as it undoubtedly will and has) but they informed me that they go from the initial report date that you contacted them on your complaint and will honor a repaint on what's currently failing for only 6 months after you report the problem to them. That's kind of a joke as now what wasn't painted is failing so if you can GO ALL THE WAY with your insistance of a complete PAINT JOB ON YOUR VEHICLE, that probably is the way to go about things. Looking back on it, I was to nice on this and should've INSISTED they stand behind their paint and do the whole truck. Live & learn. Chuck

Can't say for sure but I think they look at peeling paint as negative advetising for the company.I was working for a Ford dealer in the early 90s and we repainted a BUNCH of trucks because Ford was worried about owner loyalty and the full size Toyota was about to come out.

It's not an issue of a 13-year old truck, but one of a known and common defect. FWIW, it's not just Dodge that had paint problems - my dad's '89 Chevy had so much paint peel off it was unbelievable. Chevy painted it *twice* in the first six or seven years.

IIRC, the EPA changed the rules for the paint and there were a lot of problems with peeling paint from the late 80's to the mid 90's. I've noticed quite a few 2nd Generation Dodges with the same problems.

I wouldn't expect the company to be liable for anything after 10 years, personally. (Well, I really don't like warranties over 3 years; I really really think ten years is a stretch for a car.)

But if they'd want to pay for a paint job, I would take it.

My truck's only changed hands, like, 12 times in the past 15 years, so I'm sure I'm not liable...

I used to be a GM tech and can say from experience peeling paint is not a normal wear and tear, it's a defect, it is caused by poor prep or primer porosity issues. I commonly see vehicles over 30 years of age with thier original paint which have only faded and chipped but never peeled. These vehicles were NOT GARAGED EVER!

I am the second owner of my truck and I do wish dodge would paint it as the clear coat is peeling off of the front fenders and hood . It was garaged and well cared for by the previous owner.

Remember the squeeky wheel gets the grease!

I'm not saying that the dealer should pay for old warrenty issues when I talk about winning the war. I am talking about the dealers trying to disreguard just about every claim that anyone has on their vehicles.I havent had a vehicle with a warrenty in a lot of years, but I do hear about a lot of claims where people have to threaten the dealers to get them to stand behind the warrenty.

How and/or does anyone know who I'd need to contact in the southern Cal area for this? The dealer is kind of clueless about the paint issues. I'm the original owner of a Green/Silver and it fell off after 3 years!!

thanks

brad

I called the factory rep in Beaverton OR I recall. The dealer will look at you like your nuts (which makes us even) so don't expect much help from them . I think you can check the yellow pages in any large city and find a Dodge/Chrysler rep. That name & numer would also be known by someone at the dealer....if ya can get it out of them. It may also be in your owners manual. Chuck
