Just picking you turbo gurus brains about cracks in the mounting flange of big turbos. I've got a guy that wants to trade me an HT60 for an HX35 I've got just sitting on the shelf. He had it inspected and repaired by a Cummins tech and it's been rebuilt. But, it had some stress cracks in the mounting flange and the "tech" advised to repair the cracks by relieving the stress using some well placed smacks with a hammer and chisel. Im looking for a primary to run in conjunction with HE351 and HT3Bs and HT60s are fine by me. I understand their reverse rotation and I'm ok with the fact that the piping I'll fab up will only work for reverse rotation turbos. I'm just curious of yalls thoughts on these cracks and chisel repairs. Will it last, hurt anything. Any potential damage other than leaking and having to eventually replace the housing
I had thought about grinding then down, welding them and re machining the mounting surface. Just worried about how far the cracks go into the bend and depth of the cracks. I have not got the turbo yet so I'm just going off what this guy is telling me. I haven't put my own eyes on it yet.
Housing is JUNK no amount of welding is going to fix it. I can see from the pictures that the hsg is flanking away at the center those little flakes are hard and when they come off they hit the turbine wheel at speed little by little eat away at the wheel. If you see any cracks or flaking in the flange area they are JUNK. I used to send the hsg out and have them welded on the ones we couldn't buy new but I quit as they just don't live. I bet the turbine shows being hit by all those little parts coming off the exhaust hsg. Save yourself sometime and money and look for a turbo that is in good shape. 20 + years of turbo repair tells me it's JUNK PASS ON IT Ken
if the only thing wrong with it is the exhaust housing, do the trade! even without the exhaust housing, it's worth more than the hx35. especially for your plans of compounds.
Thank yall for the replies. I'm probably going to do the swap and i have sourced a genuine holset exhaust housing for $100 so i figure it's worth the hassle. Hopefully it will be a good turbo and make a nice primary. Any further input would be greatly appreciated since i won't be meeting the guy till Saturday. Gives me a few days to mull things over and get more advice
Well, all is well with the HT60. Was at a local diesel performance shop picking up another part today and after talking with the Co-owner who just so happened to have a pile of turbine housings laying around. Scored this genuine Holset beauty for $40. Can't wait to start welding some piping
