How much transmission fluid?

Ok, I got the tranny line fixed. Cut it off and put on a flare fitting. Ok so far.
Next question. How much fluid do these trannys hold? I put 1 qt. in torque convertor before installing. Then I added 4 qts. before cranking. Cranked in park and added 5 more qts while running. ( 10 so far)
With brake on, shifted thru gears. Barely could feel it changing. Checked level in neutral, not touching stick. Added one more qt and now just barely touching stick. Starting to shift firmer. Waiting on wife to get home to go get more. I thought it held 10 qts. Wuzzup???

My book says 10.5 qt. if you drop the pan. Pulling the converter loses you several more quarts, I wouldn't be surprised if it takes another 2 qt.
