How many miles did your injection pump last, VE pump that is? Mine just died at 120,000.

 

Mine is still going strong at nearly 500,000 miles on my 92.

 

279,000, as far as i can tell its stock. how do you know it's dead?

 

Unfortunatly I was 2000 miles from home with no way to properly test it. the shop it was towed to, was sure it was the pump. I did check to see fuel was going to it, and removed the fuel shutoff seleniod to check, but did not have any pressure gauges to check output of the ip to the injectors. Put new pump on and ran fine. gasoline was run through it about a year ago, so this may have caused premature wear. i would have liked to keep the old pump, but the core charge was more then I wanted to pay so let it go.

 

did it run on gas, and if you heard it how did it sound? woundering what it was like.

 

two 91.5's, one went 135k one is still going at 315k.

 

91.5 fixed some leaks @ 130,000 still going strong @ 190,000.

 

440,000 miles on the original VE in my 92 with no problems at all and still running strong.

Somewhere in the nieghborhood of 300,000 odo is broke, last 25 -30,000 its been all cranked up

 

125,000 when it started leaking after the switch to new fuel (ULSD). Just replaced the seals & gaskets and still going at 143,000.

 

Still running the original head and rotor at 272,000 miles. Was rebuilt at 213,000 because the plunger return springs broke.

 

I enjoy reading this thread: The ol' mechanical VE Pump is pretty reliable and can go many miles untouched. Some folks argue that it is not a big performer like it's newer cousin, the P7100 inline pump. I personally think they are great little performers and are mechanic friendly.

 

A lot of pumps get blamed for other problems.

Also, once something besides fuel gets in the pump, there is no way for it to get out, so a tiny tiny speck of whatever can lodge in a passage and stop the flow of fuel; in this case, nothing is wrong with the pump that a good cleaning won't fix.


Many pumps are replaced simply because they are considered too mysterious to be messed with.

 

First one went out at around 32k miles on the truck. Bad pump from factory. Since then been running the new one and got 140 k on the truck at the time i replaced it with a brand new one so that i wouldnt have fuel problems with pushing as much HP as i am.

 

I sure would have liked to keep the old to check it out at home, think you are right it well could have been a small problem in the pump. 2000 miles away from home is no time to take it apart in the middle of nowhere though.

To answer the fellow on running on gas it stalled pretty quickly. My experiance with kabota diesels is that they run away on gas. so was surprised the cummins did not. perhaps oxygenated gas has too many bubbles in it, and air locks the pump.
