a518 automatic is also called a 46re correct?

have heard it being referred to as either term many times and am just wanting some clarity, someone is saying they only came behind gassers?

the 518 is also called a 46rh,
4-# of forward ratio`s
6- torque capacity
R-rear wheel drive

91.5-93= 46RH
94-95= 47RH
96-early 03= 46RE
03HO-07= 48RE

^ that's in the diesel trucks.

In the 1500's with gas engines, they changed often from like 94-98. I think the most common is the 46RE and the 46RH though. I don't know much about 1500's.

My 92 dakota had a 518. According to the spec sheet.
Some say the 518 did not have a lock-up converter.

BTW, the 46xx case is different from the 47RE,48RE. The 518/46 cases bolt to the v8 motors not the diesel.

Well the Non-Lockup A518 used in a 91.5-93 Cummins trucks is also referred to as a 46RH. And it's physically the same case as a 47RH/47RE/48RE used newer cummins trucks.

We had a 92 D250 with a 318 magnum and it had an A518 with a lockup converter (said right on the spec sheet), and It was a quick truck. The transmission really isn't geared too bad

well brandon i have some food for thought...i picked one up out of a late producion 93 in pennsy and it has the same bulky case the 618/47rh has and it has the heavy duty band but no lockup? if it is what it looks like ill be using it for my build.

Mopar its still probably a 518, as said the diesels trans cases are almost the same between the 518\618. But anythings possible the only way to tell would be to open it up. I know most v8 trans had lock up even some of the 727s had lock up. but i do have an a500 with out the lock up.

last i checked no 727 had lockup? and we have too much work to get done for me to waste the time to crack one of the 518s open just to see what it is. if i'm opening it up i'm gonna rebuild it. and the a500 is the 904 with overdrive if its early enough like pre-94 it would come without lockup like our a518s

no 727 diesel had a lock-up. plenty of gassers 727s did.

what years exactly did the 727 have lockup? what models? i would find it a bit silly that they put lockup on the 3 speeds and not the new and improved a518 four speed

dang i cant remember. i think it was in the early 80s. i know i put one in my 72 dodge van. i will do some checking when i get some of my junk fixed that is broke now and post it.

A518 is the 46RH and 46RE
A618 is the 47RH and 47RE

Middle of '91, the Intercooled 1st Gens came with the 46RH (A518, basically a 727 w/OD), not the 46RE.

You could get a 727 with lockup converter starting in 1978 in most gassers. 727's hooked to 440's, the Super Six, and anything designated as Heavy Duty did not have a lockup converter.

The A518 isn't actually a new and improved 4-speed.... It's still the same basic 3 speed but with the added Overdrive. I believe they didn't have the LU converter on the diesel's because the torque capacity was too high for the current clutch to handle.
