Holset turbo
Holset turbo
New to site and to owning a 1992 w-250 with CTD and l;ove it. Is the holset a stock turbo for the engine or is it an aftermarket item? Anyone have numbers for power output for this turbo? it is a H1E and I think it was from 7/1993.
Re:Holset turbo
The Holset H1C came standard on all first generation rams from 89-93. In 94, a wastegated WH1C was used until 96 I believe. I dont know the power output of this turbo. However, the turbo is starting to get out of its map width at 23psi.
Re:Holset turbo
Thanks for the information mony. It looks like the origional H1C was replaced in 1993 with the H1E Holset Turbo. Does anyone have any information that would determine the differences between the two? I am looking to upgrade to a newer turbo in the future and would like to have any information. The truck has banks power pack badges on the side, so I wonder if the H1E was an option from them in 1993? Truck still runs strong with 259,000 miles on it but it is hard for me to compare since this is the first CTD I have owned. Have more questions but will post them in under a different topic.

Thanks,
Jim
Re:Holset turbo
At the risk of repeating myself (sorry) the Banks kit (which my brother has on his truck) was a "hot end" a 14cm W/G replacement, exhaust, intercooler etc... depending on which "kit" you bought.
The H1C is the turbo used on the 93's.
I think differences between early/late 1st gens was the internal "horn" of the turbo.
The early ones would at times suffer from "air separation" at higher levels of boost. (that's just my somewhat "old timers memory though)
You'd know if you had separation from the "fluttering" sound it makes. The newer H1C does not do that.

Bob.
