Hello all!

Please bare with me here......I come from a Toyota 4x4 backround! I have just "inherited" a BONE STOCK 1st Gen W250 LE. It's a standard cab, long box, 4x4 5sp, with the intercooled 5.9L CTD. I know NOTHING of this truck, and my dad was the 2nd owner. I ran the VIN number thru an online VIN decoder, and it didn't tell me much. I'm curious to know things like what axles are under it, what gear ratio are in the pumpkins, what tranny and transfer case I have. I have been lurking around the forums for the last few days, and have been reading/learning lots of things. LOVE the stickies! I have some of the common problems, as the speedo works MOST of the time, the trip and od numbers don't work/roll, and the cruise doesn't work. I'm not bothered by those, as my GPS tells me what I need to know. 1 thing I have noticed, is my speedo reads 'bout 4 MPH different than what my gps says, again, I'm not worried at all 'bout that. Another thing, the BRAKE and ABS lights always stay on when the engine is running. MY dad said before he died that he had the brakes checked, and installed a new ABS sensor, and the lights didn't go out. As I said, I'm not worried 'bout those right now, as I've read different things 'bout those, and the truck stops with no problems. This truck was just a winter truck, when he was alive. I'm now in the process of driving from Wa State, to NC, and will be my DD for awhile. Sorry for the LONG winded 1st post.....lol. This is my 1st diesel truck, and I'm really beginning to enjoy the power and fuel milage! I forgot what it was like to drive a truck with a solid front axle! It also has stock manual locking hubs......can any1 tell me who makes them? I know Aisin make the factory locking hubs for Toyota, but would like to know a company name for who makes the hubs for Dodge. Thank you in advance for your help in answering my questions!

Welcome aboard! First off. you came to the right place. I was just like you, many years wrenching on vehicles, but nothing diesel. You have a dana 60 in the front and a dana 70 in the back. The ratio is something that you can determine by jacking up the rear end, turning the wheels 1 revolution and counting how many times the drive shaft turns. If the engine is not screaming at normal highway speed, it is probably 3.56, but that is just a guess. If you search your ABS problem, you will get a gazillion returns, but this problem can be vexing. I personally had to chuck the drums and convert to disks to solve my problem, but that is just my solution. Good luck and happy dieseling ...Mark

You most likely will have 3.55 or 4.10 gears. You should have a getrag 360 trans unless by chance some one has changed it out to a newer 94-02 nv4500 trans. Your transfer case is a 29 spline np205. Just for reference if your truck was auto it would have a a-518 4 speed and a 23 spline np205. Sound like a nice rig! Post some pictures!!

Pop the hood and look for a sticker. Should be all the way to your right at the front. It has axle ratio information on it. Most common is 3.55.
There is a ratio adapter between the T case and the VSS. You need to get the correct ratio for the speedo to read accurately.
There is a long list of reasons the cruise control isn't working.
I would encourage you to get a factory service manual. No cheap, but will save you time, grief, and money in the long run.

Mark, yeah this Dodge is a totally new learning curve for me. I've built and turned wrenches on Toyota 4x4's since I was 16....and all my friends vehicles lol. As i said, I'm in the middle of relocating to NC, and it's cold here in South Dakota.....too cold to jack up the truck and do the rotation test to determine my exact gear ratio. The engine doesn't seem to scream at freeway speeds, but a nice rumble at 65.....I'm not pushing this truck to the 70 and 70+ mph's til I KNOW all the quirks and everything!

Bryson, as far as I know, nothing has been swapped out on this rig. My dad used to work with the 1st owner, and the only thing that I know was done, was my dad bought and put on the correct tire size for the Dodge....285/80R16 (I believe).

91.5, I'm headed back to Wilmington.

Cougar, 1 of the things my dad taught me when it comes to owning any vehicle, the 1st thing you buy is the FSM. If the tech's use in their bays, it's good enuff to use in my garage. I have the FSM sitting in the camper on the truck, now. THANK YOU all for the welcome and the quick info. Now I can start to make my master list of what this has, for future part/parts ordering. And since we all love pics.....

Cool. If you dig through the brake section you will find instructions on the ABS diagnostic test. It will give you codes to help track down the problem.

Welcome to the club. Hope you love it like most of us. Correct tire size is. 235 85R 16. Might have something to with the speed error.

thanks BC, I just checked the BFG AT's, and that's the size I'm runnin.....285/85R16. As I said, I'm not worried 'bout the speedo being off, as my GPS shows my current speed, and only being off by a few mph is acceptable to me.......

4 MPH at highway speed isn't too bad.
First thing I'd check on the ABS light is to see if their is vacuum to the little sensor on the left fender under the hood hinge. Could be the vacuum is cut off to the cruise, too.
