headlights randomly quit working
Hey guys this one is a bugger. I'll be driving my truck to work in the morning and after a little bit my headlights decide to turn off then they'll pop right back on after a few seconds. Does it just about every morning now but I thinks its gradually getting worse and I'm sick of looking like a idiot driving with my headlights flashing on and off. About a year go I replaced the switch and the plastic plug was melted and crap so I plugged every wire in idivisualy. It just started pulling this crap again about a month ago. I don't think its a loose wire though. Anybody have any suggestions? Every bit of help is much appriated.
I would suspect the switch. New or not, there's quite a bit of amperage running through that thing and they commonly burn out. Does it do it on high and low beams? You may want to check the connections on that switch, just to be sure.
In my opinion the factory headlight wiring stinks like seagull droppings. I bought some heavy gage wire and a couple of 30 amp relays and I am only using the existing circiut to work the relays. The power for the lights comes straight off the battery through a couple automatic circuit breakers. Works great and the lights are much brighter. I got the idea from one of the guys on this site. Do a search and you should find a diagram on how to do it.

Info on doing that is in the "How do I...?" sticky.

Relays will pull power off the switch and keep it cooler

Don't over look the dimmer switch. When I got my 93 this spring,I was having the same problem, and traced it to the dimmer switch, all it took on mine was a few squirts of wd40,add it works fine.
The headlight switch has an internal thermal circuit breaker built inside of it.
I have had this happen on different trucks when I had my gauge lighting connected to the dimmer circuit. The extra lights on the circuit caused the rheostat to overheat causing the switch to overheat and trip the breaker leaving me driving 80 MPH when my headlights would blink OFF. After a few minuets it would cool off and reset then the lights would come back on.
Sounds like you might have a short in a lighting circuit, it could be either the headlights or tail, marker lights also check your trailer connector if you have one.
When the lights go out, do the tail, dash and marker also go out?
I would also install relays on all of my lights.
Just an idea.
