Question >>> grid heater solenoids ??? <<<

Question concerning the factory-issue grid-heater solenoids.

These are TWO individual units, just mounted side-by-side, right ??

Are they solenoids or relays ??

Are they continous-duty ??

How many amps continous ??

How many amps surge in short bursts ??

I have a project in mind and plenty of these just collecting dust.

Thanks.

Are they solenoids or relays ?? A solenoid is an electrical motor of sorts. It just pulls on stuff. In the case of a relay, the solenoid pulls in a set of contacts. To answer your question: Yes.

Are they continous-duty ?? Those used in our application: No.

How many amps continous ?? Cummins specs the heaters as pulling 220amps (@ 12vdc I assume).

How many amps surge in short bursts ?? I suppose you'd have to contact the relay maker to find that out.

I have big Cole Hersees and AMETEKs for those duties.

I was thinking more along the lines of these doing things where the little ice-cube Bosch units seem just a little under-gunned; besides, these are already here and paid for.

On critical stuff, I have been using the 40-amp ice-cubes in tandem; more to halve the arc than split the load.

The ones on my truck are Continuous Duty
What are the numbers on it?

If it is a White Rodgers 120-105711 solenoid it is rated at
100-amps Continuous duty

http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/WHI...017?Pid=search

There is also an identical looking one that is Intermittent Duty 30 seconds ON and 6 minuets OFF.

Here is a page for reference.

I have a few of these in circuits on my truck.

If you are concerned about arcing or using them on inductive loads then use the Bosch 75-amp Power Relay like I have on my Blower Motor, it is designed with a leading and main tungsten contact to suppress the arc.

Check here on page 15.

Also remember that Bosch is now Tyco.
