Got the truck home. Now what?

Just need some advice on a couple of things.

First some background. Purchased a 1992 Ram 250 sight unseen from a guy in CA. Flew out from Iowa on a Friday. Met him and started driving back that night. Santa Cruz to Davenport IA. No problems until I hit Des Moines. Has an aux tank and I think I flipped the switch and pumped a bunch of crap out of the aux tank. One new fuel filter later back on the road.

Now it is home and I've been driving it daily. What a great truck.

Now for the questions.

1. What is the best way to clean out that aux tank? It is a 40 gallon tank that sits under the toolbox in the bed. The filler has some rust so I'm expecting the same in the tank.

2. Came with an Extarder brake. PO said there was a valve af some kind on the air tank behind the front bumper. That valve is broke off. I searched Extarder and get to the Jake Brake website but the system pics don't show an air tank. Is there a good source for old Extarder/Jake Brake systems?

3. Is there a good source for parts like bumpers and hubcaps?. Need one hubcap and the front bumper is pretty banged up.

4. It has a fifth-wheel hitch in the bed. I don't need it. Is it worth anything? Good place to sell it?

Thanks for the help guys. I look forward to learning a lot around here.

Darryl

Dmoon about 3 years ago I bought an extra fuel tank from a guy that used it twice. He had put gasoline in it and after the hurricane was over he used the rest of the fuel and let the tank set, it had some rusty crud in the bottom. When I rigged up the tank with a pump, filter, ect I bought 4 filters. What I did was just recirculate the fuel out of the tank right back into the tank. Stopped up the filter after doing this several times. Replaced filter and over a period of several days kept recirculating the fuel thru the new filter as I had time. After stopping up the second filter and starting on the 3rd one that was a 2micron I pumped the fuel into some cans to view the tank bottom. It was clean and shiny. I've used this tank now for about 3 years with no problems. Whatever you try good luck with it.

Dmoon the front bumper is a high dollar unit from a dealer, I haven't priced one personally but my buddy did and if he telling it straight the complete bumper and all the brackets and trim was $1400 plus. Not sure on hub caps. Drive the ole truck and enjoy it. Fill out the signature so we can see what it is, and what all that's been done to it and what you have done to it. If you like performance these ole trucks do a good job to tune ups, if it's a 5sp it will really respond to a tune up. But if you start tuning it you will like it, then the bug bites and you will wanna keep upgrading this and that ect.. Something like a drug addiction it only gets worse. Good luck with your truck.

Left Santa Cruz, CA about 7:00PM Friday night. Up through San Francisco to go over the Golden Gate Bridge. Then hit I-80 for the rest of the trip. Would have made it into the Quad Cities by 10:30 Sunday night if I hadn't had the problem in Des Moines.

Was actually a pretty fun trip. Saw lots of places that I never would otherwise. Bonneville Salt Flats had to be the highlight though.

you can find replacement bumpers in several different online auto parts stores for about $200.00. This LOOOONG link below is an example.

www.partstrain.com has bumpers as well. If you can remove tank and clean it , lot easier to do right if its off.

I looked for quite a while for a front bumper for mine, and gave up. Wound up with a great big massive chrome-plated hide-a-winch bumper, looks like it's off a Ford, that someone put mounts on for a Dodge. Found it on craigslist.

Yours is a 1992 ? Those were de-tuned from the factory, some sort of stupid attempt at reducing emissions by reducing the power they put out. You're gonna want to replace that 21 square centimeter "Lagmaster" turbo exhaust housing ASAP. I put a 16 sq cm on mine, cost around $150 IIRC, makes a huge difference in how fast it spools up. Next up will be better injectors, from what I understand the injectors on the 1992s weren't as good as other years.

Made the trip back alone. Really enjoyed it. Kind of liberating to not have anyone else to look after.

Thanks for the links and suggestions guys. Looks like I'll be spending some money. LOL

Give's a man alittle time to look around for sure. Oh yea, you'll be spending money alright. Shop around though. I ended up with a 2nd gen intercooler with all the piping, clamps and hose's for $90.00 dollars shipped. The deals are out there, one just has to shop around...Good luck and keep the forum updated on your updates.....
